If you don't have an avatar set, we'll go and see if you have one over at Gravatar:

And then we'll use that.

Does this mean that having some kind of avatar is compulsory? (NB I don't think that's a bad thing, as I like avatars.)

It also means that if you have an avatar here, and you would rather use your gravatar... just set the preferences here to say that you don't want to have an avatar, and it will use a gravatar instead.

Would the same effect be achieved by deleting a non-Gravatar avatar from the User CP?
