  • Transport for London have produced a free series of cycle maps:
    https://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/roadusers/cycling/cycleroutes/default.asp
pick which ones you want and they will post out. Paper not hardcopy though.

  • yeah thanks... needing maps for this-ish

TfL are doing a lot of work with regards to cycle hire in the city, so I think there range of maps will increase quite dramatically soon.

Wow. That will end up somewhere between 250 and 300 miles depending on route.

  • I got the TfL maps crankster mentioned and they are brilliant, especially as they are free! Depends where you are but the central London ones pretty much save you ever having to carry a heavy A-Z with you.

  • yeah that towns called 'bagoffreetits' lets go there.

thats on my list too.... dont let me forget my camera....

yeah we're thinking its about the 280mark ish... fixed ftw.

its a few days long ride too, so not going all out crazy.

  • Spiral bound 1:250,000 Road Atlas from a pound shop. 1 earth pound.

Rip out the pages that cover your route, stuff in ziploc bag. Refold as necessary.

1:50,000 maps are a nightmare for cycling with (especially on a route of that length) as you'll be moving and refolding them every 5 miles or so. If it's raining there's no way to do this without the map getting wet and it'll be fucked at the end of the first day.

I needed about 7 map pages for this: [ame]http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/266092[/ame

[/ame] (GPS tracklog filled up on the way into Dalkeith, I actually carried on up to North Berwick) as a backup to my (non-mapping) GPS. Didn't need to look at the map pages once.

Who cares about contour lines, sites of historic interest or whatever.

I suggest you stick to the road Ray, it's much easier.

  • ... thing is its less about the actual riding more about what we see, not trying to cover as much ground as possible.

We used a road atlas last time we rode to exeter its just not quite good enough, level of detail a bit shy of what we were after i think 1:50000 would be heaps better.

So it seems like OS is the map of choice.

  • Fair enough. I do like the 1:50,000 OS maps. Growing up I had one on my wall that I used to plot rides around the local area.

I've got a nice big 4m x 2m wall in the living room that would be great to cover with a big map of the UK but I doubt I'll get that idea past the wife...

  • yeah man... about 3 years ago i ordered all the TFL maps and did a cut and celotape job on it its fucking massive (bout 4mX3.8m)... ended up binning it.

    nothing quite like actual maps.

  • apart form actual maps of course.

  • tommy [no laughter to be found].... [actual laughter]

  • i just popped into Stamfords shins and can confirm there are loads of maps in there. shit floorplan of the shop though. go figure.

    hope this helps.

will look forward to seeing some good shots of the cuntryside from your trip.

    map-read safe

  • shins can't read let alone map read.

    that hurts deep tommy.

why not do a combo of googlemap research up close and make notes for when to detour to places you think might be interesting.

You can print up the detour parts in larger scale to supplement the main ride then, which will have biro marks on it when to refer to the detail.

  • No comment on venom.

  • ok on a serious note what did you use on your pootle with the missus? you dont grab me as a GPS kinda guy.

  • I'm too poor for that.
Yellow Michelin maps of France. I learnt though that they are not as good as a British road map, which tends to have all roads, these missed out a few.
