Does anyone know about this bike at all?
I might be picking on up if its good enough to convert!
Any past experiences or has anyone got one?

  • I had one when I 15 or 16, it lasted me years and I had it resprayed twice and built into many different set ups and used it as a winter hack until 2 years ago. The later ones were Reynolds plain gauge tubing 501, though the earlier ones like mine were 3 main tubes 531 - strong as an ox, but nothing really special IMHO. Just right for fixing up :)

  • top man, cheers mate

  • I got a pick of it on the fixed gear gallery after its last respray, I'll try and post a link to it... not sure if I can do it as I am new ?

Take a look, very strong comfortable, steel ride - wish I still had it :(

I just picked one up as well, taken all the bits off it and turning it into a fixie. Seems solid with the 501 tubing. I've stuck some pics on my profile if you are interested

  • There are many versions of the "Raleigh Record" and they are quite variable in specification.
I have had a straight Raleigh Record as fixed gear and a Raleigh Record Sprint as a geared bike.
The Raleigh Record is pretty bomb proof although not the lightest bike, it is pleasant to ride.
The sprint version is in my opinion a relaxing bike to ride although if you are a very strong sprinter you may find the frame a little too flexible around the bottom bracket. This does not come into the equation for me.

  • theres a few variations of the records. They are very common 1980's Raleigh road bikes.

Made of reynolds 501 generally. A mix of weinmann and SR parts if I remember right. The Black ones had awesome gold components.

The bikes always look much bigger than they are. The fork crowns tend to be weak and flexy.

I had one as my first fixed build, evnentually snapped the dropout. A friend bought a Record fixed build of ebay, also had a snapped dropout. So I think its fair to say the dropouts (sheet not forged) are not that durable for fixed riding.

The bikes look a lot bigger than they ride, and they are very comfortable. I found mine pretty light.
