I've Loved You So Long (Philippe Claudel, 2008). Kristin Scott Thomas acting rather than just looking beautiful; a really interesting and different film.

Elite Squad (Jose Padhila, 2008). Brazilian slum drug slime and super-tough cops. A bit of a shoot 'em up, but very good. It passed the my-mrs-didn't-walk-out test.

City of God if you're in the mood for Brazilian gangster flick...

Must look up Elite Squad
