Decent Freewheel

  • 16T designed for 1/8 thickness - is there such a thing? To go on a screw on track flip flop hub. I'm after a decent one.

All I can find is 3/32 thickness screw on or 1/8 thickness BMX which isn't any good. In 1/8 thickness all I can find is cheapo stuff that doesn't look like it might be up to the job.

    Is this a fruitless search?

Is it a problem running a monster KMC 1/8 chain on a 3/32 sprocket?

  • white industries make the best freewheels.

  • 16t 1/8 is standard BMX size.

Why is not that 'any good' ?

Shimano Freewheels are great, last decades.

  • I think spend more than £12 and you'll be OK. if not, then you can have that gnarrly feeling that you are way too rad and sick for these cheapo bike parts and legitimately upgrade, telling your mates "yeah, I tried a XXX, but I broke it in like YYY miles, so went for ZZZ."

Forgive me for being stupid, I didn't think BMX freewheels where of the screw on type?

    it doesn't say 1/8 or 3/32 thickness....

  • BMX freewheels are the same threading as others (even cogs), except the mini ones that have less than 15T, they use a smaller thread... and the Left Hand Drive ones..
You can happily and safely use a 3/32 freewheel with your 1/8 chain, I second DeadlyCB's suggestion of a shimano. Mine has lasted a couple of years.

  • Are the Shimano ones still really silent? I always used to find it quite unnerving having a silent drivetrain. Now it's the opposite.

You want to choose the options: Right and 16T

just bought one of these myself

  • Unless you want to shell out over £60 for a White Industries ENO, the Shimano will do just fine. Hard wearing, reliable and quiet.

  • just use a 3/32 one it make no odds.

  • if you bring a freewheel removal tool to mine you can have a free one
