Stolen bikes

  • The George in Hackney (near London Fields) is a real hotspot. Had over £100's worth of seat posts and saddles gone there and friends wheels gone too. What about an ambush?

  • Most stuff is nicked from outside the pub when you are in. Has anyone tried these?

    Ebay item number: 140310291231

    Under the saddle maybe?

  • that's great, thought the problem is that when you lock your bike on a sheffield stand, chance are other cyclist could easily touch it and set the alarm off when they lock/unlock their bicycle next to the alarmed one.

    according to the bay page;

"Using a U-Lock? You still need our alarm - a U-Lock can be opened in 10 seconds using a Bic biro."

nice sales tactic considering that only certain Kryponite one is affected!

  • Possible stolen spotted on Peckham Rye last night, the bike was seatless and the chap riding it was having conciderable difficulty slowing down as he zoomed past me.
He was gone before I could get a good look at the bike but it was a fixed white track frame with black rims.
It was weird as the guy obviously couldn't control the bike and without a seat he was sort of hovering above the seat post. Not a good idea.
Anyway, I hope it wasn't a stolen but I thought I'd share this strange experience all the same.

  • I've just reported it to gumtree.

  • Strange man tried to push me off my bike and take it right by traf last night..I was with friends anywho so all good

  • Newbie here, in process of getting my first single speed after having my Specialized Crossroads nicked last Friday.

The galling thing about that bike being stolen was that it was in a coded area of my workplace, so some fugger at the office block must have given them the code. The management had the theiving scum recorded nicking my bike and two others as well as the getaway in their van.

Anyway reported this with the details of the CCTV images held by the management of the office block to the police on the same evening. Got a letter yesterday from the Met, saying they had closed the case cos of insuffiecent evidence. The letter was dated March 28, I reported it at March 27. Go figure.

  • Oh, shit. How utterly frustrating!

I once unwittingly left my bike not locked in Central London, at my usual locking-up place, in full view of passers-by, for an entire day. When I returned and found it not locked but still there, I almost died. It's a horrible feeling.

I know how it feels. I almost died too when I was stabbed 43 times in the neck.

  • I've been readin through this thread and had to sign up.

Had my Trek 1.5 with custom built DT Swiss wheels stolen 2 days ago. Wheels were barely 3 weeks old! Was locked up, in a locked bike shed, in a "secure" gated car park! How they got I have no idea, but they got my bike, and a couple of others

    Some further details

    Red & White 2008 Trek 1.5

Rear wheel - DT Swiss 1.1 rim, Dt Swiss 240s hub
Wheels will be odd because they had to leave the front one behind, it had the d-lock through it.

2 red bottle cages, one Bontrager

    Shimano SPDs

I've notified local second hand bike shops, and am taking a trip down to Brick Lane this Sunday, probably with some sort of concealed weapon. I'll keep ya'll posted.

That makes me very angry. very.

Sorry to hear about your loss!

The answer is simple--they stake out a building, they work out how to get in, and then (most likely overnight) they know that they'll have lots of time, hidden safely away inside a bike shed, to get through the locks. The majority of bikes are stolen from homes, even secure sheds.

And I'm sure you've reported it to the police, as well?

Report it, report it, report it--yours was a burglary and they tend to be more interested in that than if bikes are taken off the street. Even if they take no action in your case (which is very frustrating), they need the weight in reported numbers to take action.

BTW, I'd think that it's pretty unlikely that your bike would be sold on in London, or sold on as a whole bike.

Surely that can't be right? Have you followed it up? Try contacting the police again. This case should interest them--likely serial offenders; CCTV footage; perhaps evidence about the van--does the CCTV show the registration clearly enough? Tell them this must be a computer error and whether they could reconsider. If you get a sensible person, they might at least be able to explain to you what happened there. I don't know if you can go to the Police Complaints Commission over a small thing like this, but it just doesn't add up.

I have reported to the fuzz. They came and had a look at the scene, but I've heard nothing since. I've asked the others that've had their bikes stolen to report it, and quote the same ref no. but no idea if they actually have. I staked out the car park the following night too, in the (unlikely) hope they tried their luck a 2nd night running, but no sign of em.

As for getting it back, I'm slowly coming to the realisation that that ain't gonna happen, which is pretty damn shit. I quite fancy taking out my frustration on any old scally on a bike that clearly isn't legit.

But...guess I'll put this down as a lesson learnt. You can never be too careful!

  • Said i'd stick this up for a girl I work with... she'll be down Brick Lane at the crack of dawn tomorrow...

  • some c*nt stole my saddle and seatpost today. i left my bike locked up on regent street -- arguably the busiest street in the world, on a f*cking saturday afternoon. i get back and someone's raped my bike. f*ckheads.

so if anyone sees a brand new honey brooks swift attached to a vintage campagnolo c-record aero seatpost, it's mine. bastards.

  • aw, shit. sorry to hear that teddy.

  • Ah fucking hell mate that's really shit, I got an (abiet worn) honey B17 if you want to borrow it for Berlin?

  • no it was on my holdsworth. my mercian's coming to berlin with me. hopefully my insurance will cover it. thanks though.

what kind of stupid idiot is brave/stupid enough to steal something at oxford circus on a saturday? what kind of selfish/stupid crowd doesn't stop him?

  • The British crowd that is, they never go to the rescue, they just observe the said incident, and then write to the Daily Mail about the lack of police stopping bike theft.

I suppose it's easy to removed saddle making it look like you're removing it to take it with you to prevent it getting stolen, oh the irony!

What Ed said. Did you have your seatpost on a quick release?

Even without a quick release, it's an extremely quick job, sad to say.

  • To prevent it from happening again, after you finally adjust the saddle and height to your liking, superglue balls bearing in the allen bolts, that'll make it notoriously diffcuilt for the allen keys to get a good grip.

best way to reduced the likehood of it getting stolen, especially giving you a piece of mind locking it outside pubs!
