Another couple of questions

  • Ok two things
    1) I recently baught a threaded fork which is just alittle too long for my bicycle at the top end (steerer or whatever its called). Do you think I can just get the old saw out and hack away at it for abit to make it the right length? Obviously don't want to damage the product beyond use.
    2) Went to BLB to get the parts for my first wheel build and being abit of a novice at the whole build idea I just elt the guy do his thing and sort out the spoke lengths etc. After lacing the wheel for the first time it seems like (for both wheels) that they're too long because the nipples don't quite show through even after tightenning them abit. For example if i lie the wheel verticaly the nipples at the top show through but the ones at the bottom of the wheel disappear. Is this just a tightening issue or do I need to make the journey over to Brick Lane again top return them! (I'm a Westie! So long trip . .)

    Anyway thanks.

  • take your forks to your LBS to get cut... it'll only be about a fiver.
dont know alot about wheelbuilding, But Broken_77 (martin?) who does all the wheelbuilds at BLB knows his stuff, so i doubt he gave you the wrong lenght spokes.

  • Yeah it was Martin. I also doubt he messed up he seemed to know his stuff. I guess its just my own inexperience! Prehaps another few hours with the spoke key.

  • how far down the spoke thread are the nipples?

  • All the way baby. No thread showing.

  • I got a little over carried away with my sexual double entendre. The top of the nipple (the rectangular segment) just covers the thread on the spoke and no more. But even then most of the nipples aren't even visible past the rim.

  • use this to check spoke lengths

also check the lacing to see if it follows the pattern you were aiming for.
