You can also go through a "Studentische Zimmervermittlung" web-site. Well, technically, you're a student, so they'd probably not bat an eyelid if you said that you wanted to stay there for the purpose of studying, even if you're not immatriculated at a particular university there ... then again, I haven't tested out that theory.
