What is your BB clearance? Let's make a list!

  • I am getting a bit annoyed with the crank clearance on my current vintage frame fixed conversion, pedals scratching the tarmac when I turn corners and whatnot. I'm just curious at to what the rest of you put up with and what sort of bottom bracket clearance I can hope to get when shopping around for my next frame.

In order to learn more I would very much like to see us set up a list the way it has been done before on this forum. Just measure the distance from center of your BB to the ground, and perhaps add if you are riding a vintage or recent frame. I know there are lots of bike hoarding weirdos on here with all kinds of bikes at home, but preferably state the stats for your most frequently used city ride please.

If we get a decent amount of replies I might even re-edit this first post and set it up as a graph kind of thing?

  • OK, first out is me then..

    1. starfish and coffee - 250 mm - vintage frame
  • Here's mine just to help you on your way with your spreadsheet

I've a Sirius track bike, running 23c tyres and that gives me 305mm BB height
I use 170mm cranks and have not yet had any cornering/clearance issues.

  • What is your bottom bracket height? (floor to center)

True.... but then again, it was a while ago and the list idea didn't quite seem to get going.

Please make this into a list. It just wouldn't be right if all these numbers weren't arranged into a list.
List please. List. List now thankyou. Listy list list. It's list time.

  • There you go Starfish. Mr DMC has the whole thing sorted on his existing thread. Already quite comprehensive by the look of it.

  • Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to sound ungrateful. People have put in a pretty good effort on that thread.

  • As Hippy suggests, it just needs compiling into a single speadsheet/list. Not me though I'm afraid. I'm not the aspiring accountant type.

  • Calling GA2G, come in GA2G. Services needed in aisle 4!

  • 160mm cranks ftw.... once you get used to them you dont notice the difference anyway.

  • A big fat fuck all (around 240-245mm) with wide bmx pedals, and 165mm cranks.....

  • I see crazyjames mentioned the width of his pedals, which is a good point.

Factors affecting pedal clearance, with my stats:

BB height - 280mm (BJ vigorelli, 20/22 mm tyres)
    Crank length - 165mm
    Q-factor - 131mm (campy record)
Pedal width - 80mm (crank bros quattro)

This has proved to be a pedal strike free set-up (for me at least)

I am so much in IGNORE mode, I may even slip into total DENIAL mode.

  • who said that??

  • :)

My frame is a 53cm swobo sanchez btw.
