  • yep it'll cut through an abus. take some evidence that it's your bike, or else this might happen

    I'll sms you

  • Wear a Hi-Vis jacket when you do it, and nobody will give you a second glance.

This is true. People often used to say that a clipboard was like a licence to do anything because if you had one people would just assume you were in a position of authority. I don't think that's true anymore (their authority has surely been eroded by the clipboard's popularity with chuggers), but hi-vis vests are the modern equivalent. Earlier today I saw a man who was clearly off his tits, standing in the middle of Tooley Street wearing a hi-vis vest and gesturing for cars at a red traffic light to break the light and carry on. Because he was wearing a hi-vis, they all did! It nearly caused an accident with a bus that was going through the actual green light.

  • thanks guys! I think Fred can help me out... hope future posts of mine are more erm, well, constructive. And will post pic of bike to show off its release from the lamppost

    stoner steve

  • hopefully I'll have this freed this evening...

  • My bike is locked up with a D lock outside my work and I'm really not diy minded so given that is it fairly easy to use an angle grinder?

  • Wear eye protection, hang on tight, don't slip and put it through yourself or your bike.

  • Gee thanks.

  • Gloves are handy too ;) Oh, and don't use a grinder with a massive disk.

  • Angle grinding is easy.

Big gloves, goggles or mask and no bare arms and you'll be set.

  • use a car jack.

  • angle grinder. it's good fun. if you have a good lock, plan on about an hour of grinding.

  • Oh, and prob best to take some ID or proof of ownerhsip in case the police take an interest - they're less likely to be suspicious if you're up-front about who you are.

that's what my mate thought when he decided to take the top off a jeep, he was cutting above his shoulder level and while cutting it jinked off the metal and into his arm... nice

    Really?????

Maybe if your angler grinder is a dremel. I'd say 2 -3 min tops.

    +1

I could hacksaw most average d-locks locks in an <hour.

Even good locks will only take seconds with powertools.

  • If using a hacksaw I'd suggest using a tungsten carbide saw blade. Is often used for cutting ceramics, stone. It'll also cut through high carbon steel quite quickly. I've used it myself on both locks and seized bottom bracket cups with some success. Hope this is usefull.

  • I'd love to be there when the Police turn up, should be quite amusing! :)

  • like i said. scissor car jack:

it's fast and quite and cheap.

  • I've done this again, lost the key to my locked up bike.
Last time I actually used a hacksaw which with the help of a friend we got through in a few minutes (it was £10, the lock, so not great).

This time I have an abus lock and the hacksaw didn't make a mark. It was a junior one, however, and quite wobbly.

  • Sorry to hear that Angelica but your story reminded me that I'd just packed the key for my MTB lock into a box that is going to storage tomorrow. Just ripped open 3 boxes to find it!

Hope you find an angle grinder soon but you have helped me out! Kudos. :-)

  • Hi All,

I am losing a hope to find some help as I just got off the phone with Metropolitan Police and have spoken to locksmiths..
My partner locked his bike outside his workplace in Hammersmith yesterday and has lost his key..... genius
Police said there is nothing they can do Locksmiths quoted £59.00 plus VAT ..! seriously?! ggrrr
I am hoping one of you guys could help us out for something smaller than £59.00 and help him release his bike?
we bought this bike a month ago from Evans so we do have proof of purchase and all ... the bike is locked outside his work too.. so no dodgy business here - I have also informed the police that we might be trying to cut the chain and given them the address so if anyone reports Police will know what is this about.

so pretty please let me know if someone can help!
    my email is Indrematiu@gmail.com

    many many thanks

    Indre

  • Same thing just happened to me, if anyone sees this could really use some help thanks I'm by the Queen's Park library on harrow road

  • I've heard of locksmiths charging a couple hundred quid to free a bike so I'd be going with the £59 quid guy.
