• I've seen guys put on and tighten their rear cogs by flipping their chain around some way and tightening the cog on with great effect. Is it possible to remove a rear cog in the same way?

    Cheers!

  • search for rotafix

  • Yes - rotafix is very good.

  • Dude, I'll GIVE you my chainwhip! shakes head
PS Do you and Jen wanna blag into a gig with us on Friday? You will like... ;)

  • Rotafix but protext the frame first up

  • Or a hammer and a screwdriver

  • oh it wont do your lock ring. straight edge screwdriver and tap it around might work if it isn't too seized.

  • yeah as Ed said

  • Skip the burger and beer deal tomorrow and get one of these??!

  • there's plenty of folk on here who'll lend you a lockring tool. i have one if you wanna borrow.

  • mines not good enough :(

  • Having removed your lockring with a suitable tool, reinstall your wheel with chain in place, then using your bodyweight backpedal on your crankarm. Without the lockring in place the sprocket should just undo (the whole reason the lockring is there in the 1st place).

  • Elguapo already has my lockring/chainwhip tool.

    Here's the Rotofix description: http://204.73.203.34/fisso/eng/schpignone.htm

  • Lockrings, try a pair of really cheap needle nose pliers and open them up WIDE. If the ends bend you can put them back straight.

Has anyone used an oil filter tool (old style chain type obvs) for removing cogs, I ask because they are loads cheaper!

  • Needle-nosed pliers will not tighten a lockring sufficiently.

A good chainwhip/lockring tool is only £25 and is well worth the (small) investment if you ever change cogs. http://www.hubjub.co.uk/etc/etc.htm

  • +1 for proper rotafixing (not that D lock nonsense) but would strongly recommend a lockring tool to avoid that sickening freewheel-on-a-fixed-gear feeling...

+1 hard to believe how many times I (and others) have used this thing.
