The bike is in a workstand so that does help. I think it's more the design of the tool really - it's a cheapy Lifeline one (in the pic above) - the splines are really long, which places the handle far away from the BB, it doesn't get great purchase and it slips out easily, hence the bolt idea.
I'll give it a shot and see what happens. May even post some pics later.
