I had gears, my bro was on singlespeed. I think having a freewheel is worth it, just for the fun of descending.
No dual carriageway problems at all on the A44. One short stretch that you won't notice. generally a nice road. And the lanes you get on the Oxford leg more than make up for it.
Fish Hill was so much fun - no traffic and those hairpins felt like an alpine descent. I wish it was about ten times longer. And yes, Moreton -> Boughton was painful on gears, but I am putting that down the heavyish luggage I had on the bike.
