  • How tall are you?

  • jammy said it's only a 58

  • Still though the basic facts are:

High flange is better than low flange.
Less holes are better than more holes.
Forged is way way better than machined.

Facts and opinion are different. High flange hubs are not necessarily better than low flange ones.

  • 6'2 its 58cc. Got abou 2" standover on it

  • As far as I know, high flange required the spokes to be tensioned more than the low flange, and thus resulting the wheel to be stiffer, right? (both normal rims of course).

  • Facts and opinion are different. High flange hubs are not necessarily better than low flange ones.

Not at all, but we are talking about radial. It is a fact that a high-flange is better for radial. Otherwise have fun!

  • Can't miss that on the rode, I like the color combo you have, how are those grips on the bars, pretty comfortable? Looks like a fun bike to ride, well done.

can't get enough of this! sooo good.

Wrong, high flange results in shorter spokes hence stiffer wheels, no difference in tensions. Low flange are normally used on road and mountain bikes to give slightly more springy and comfortable ride. High flange have always been used for track because they give a stiffer wheel, but now fashion dictates that high flange with aero rims is the way to go for road riding.

  • How come chub hub claim massively reduced spoke tensions with their huge flange hubs?

  • How come chub hub claim massively reduced spoke tensions with their huge flange hubs?

I think Chubs claim is that the rear hub is so large that it results in a large change in the angle of the spoke when compared to normal hi or low flange hubs, more tangential than radial. I'd draw a picture but can't be bothered. Anyway this means that at any time the spokes supporting the weight of the cyclist are running more parallel to the loading than on a traditional hub, this results in more effective loading of the spokes.... maybe I should draw a diagram.

  • SLOWPRO-Project almost done!! ;) all it needs now is stickers to cover up ugly stickers.... might remove some stickers of the rims too.. It is really slow, mostly due to the gearing.

Only parts not dumpstered are: hubs, rear tire, and chain.. so.. really a cheap build ;)

  • fugliest lo-pro ever.

  • horatio, argos are pretty expensive, i'd guess £200+ for the work you asked, but they do the best job. mercian is sometimes painful to deal with, but do great work.

  • gabes: Glad you like it :)

  • Not at all, but we are talking about radial. It is a fact that a high-flange is better for radial. Otherwise have fun!

Still think you are confusing fact with opinion there. Where is your test data to back up your fact, and even if you have that it is still more theory than fact.

And I am having fun on my radial wheel thanks :-)

  • I agree with kerley, why should it be better?

Again, 16 spoke (or 12) radial campag front wheels are low flange, and seem to be pretty good..

  • Uhm, I'm thinking a bit about painting that SlowPro.. should make it a bit less fugly I guess.

    How about this color:

Can get it as rattle can, would cost something like £20 ... ;)

  • Uhm, I'm thinking a bit about painting that SlowPro.. should make it a bit less fugly I guess.

I think it has the perfect level of fuglyness at the moment. leave be, IMHO.

(PS, where the feck are these dumpsters your're constantly pulling stuff out of? No fair!)

  • Smallfurry: They are in Copenhagen, various places... I stopped using most of the bikeshop dumpsters though, they seem to be pissed about it since the best of the places installed locks on their dumpsters :(

Actually I found 3 sets of those Time Z Control-pedals.. all new, but minus the cleats ;) I'm going to use a set on my utility-bike as well :)

  • my bike came up on FGG today so might as well share it with you lot as well. I know it'll get rubbished on here, but then again the nice e-mails I've gotten from FGG users will make up for it

thanks to whole fgss site for general help as I was building, and moreover to dogsballs for making the wheels - great job

for looks I should get some different bartape and white toe straps, but budget is finished for now so it'll have to wait. oh, and i really wish I had all white tyres.

This is just what I needed to spur me on with my carlton conversion. I've got open pros coming my way to, glad they look good! Also like the crankset, may have to aquire some, been wondering what would look good!

  • I had open pro's on my carlton (http://www.photosinthedark.com/Personal/Carlton/)

Also used Ofmega cranks if you see any of those around, I look forward to seeing your build!

  • My Holdsworth has been at Mercian for ten weeks on Monday. Got an email today and there is a problem with paint separation (custom paint mix) on the headtube lugs and fork crown (apparently flamboyant paints don't mix well).

They are sanding it down and starting again on Monday :(

Should look nice when it's done though.

Greetings from London, UK. This is my Carlton Continental 52 cm frame recently converted to fixie. A mix of old and new parts.
Some of the new parts are: - Zenith Sealed Bearing Track Hubs - Mavic Open Pro 700c Rims - Stronglight crank set - Vittoria Rubino tyres - Dirty Harry brake lever
This is my first fixie and more will follow. Many thanks for a great site.
