  • anti climb paint is a complete and utter cunt to get out of clothes.

  • I ruined my favourite boots forever :(

  • This vigilante approach has been discussed before - but it would only work if you see your bike for sale, or if you're going to buy it back, and can pre-plan a group response. I think in most cases, if most people saw someone else on their bike they'd be too scared or simply not think fast enough to be able to do anything effective about it.

  • if i saw someone on my bike or my mates bike or even a forumengers bike i would kick them off. its as simple as that. coppers cant do everything for you

  • i remember seeing someone on my old bike, me and my mate chased them and we came to an agreement.

  • i had a posh mountainbike stolen a few years ago. it was pretty distinctive. saw it about a year afterwards, being ridden pretty much unchanged. didn't really know what to do and decided to let it go as the guy riding it was unlikely to be the guy who stole it. still wonder if that was the right thing to do.

  • Report it and Report and Report it to the police

Sooner or late it appears as a hot spot on their crime map and then they may pay attention

Also, does Hackney LCC have any links with the Met in the Borough?

You are correct, they"may pay attention"but the likely outcome is they will not give a monkeys.

We have done work on bike theft with them in the past. As cycling in Hackney has simply skyrocketed (good), the change in policing bike theft just hasn't happened quickly enough. A new campaign may be in order. If you want to get involved, come to one of our monthly meetings:

    http://www.hackney-cyclists.org.uk/meetings.htm

The next meeting (1st April) will be our AGM, featuring as guest speaker the Mayor of London's Cycling Ambassador, Andrew Boff. Details here (scroll down to 'April 2009'):

    http://www.hackney-cyclists.org.uk/diary09.htm

This won't be a regular business meeting, but you can meet us and we can start to think about a campaign.

  • Report it and Report and Report it to the police

Sooner or late it appears as a hot spot on their crime map

    It probably already does:

    http://maps.met.police.uk/

  • There should be a neighbourhood police team covering the market and you should be able to find their emails some where on the Met's site .
Its possible that you could get them interested in the thefts in the market area . The thieves are clearly local prolific offenders who the met ought to be interested in taking out.

  • This is my story ................ it has been shortened.

Just a couple of weeks before Christmas at 1.30 am in the pouring rain a bunch thieving addicts chored my APB and the Choppers belonging to my two daughters.

I heard the noise as all 3 (chained together) were manhandled over my garden wall.

I ran to save them, shouting for them to leave the bikes and they came for me .............. they were not scared .... they intended to shut me up on my own doorstep. I bottled it and retreated.

I didn't call the police ............ because I wanted to get the thieves on my terms.

    A big big mistake ................
I visited all the local bike shops and all the local dealers and let them know to call me when my bikes surfaced.
I was warned that a very dangerous local guy was rumoured to be fencing bikes and most likely had mine.
The choppers appeared 3 days later ................... I rushed to the shop where I had been told they were offered and the owner admitted he was going to buy them off the local psychopath.

I said they were mine and I wanted them back and I would even pay a reward for their return ...........yeah he said ..good idea .......... I'll call you !!

The next morning my front door was almost kicked off the hinges and the psycho was stood on my doorstep, armed with a gun !!!!.
I talked quickly and made the right noises ...................... he eventually went away.

I could not stop shaking ................. what had I done ?? I had risked my family's safety and my life over 3 bikes ....................

DON'T do the same as me

just lock them up safely, get insurance and get over it ......... life is too precious

  • When you knew they were being hawked - why didn't you ring the po-po? Anyway, glad you are not dead.

Friend of mine just texted me to say his back wheel has been lifted in covent garden. I bloody told him to get rid of the quick release spindles!

  • When you knew they were being hawked - why didn't you ring the po-po? Anyway, glad you are not dead.

Just cannot call the filth ............ unfortunately it is considered very bad form in these parts and leads to lifelong troubles.

  • first of all, sorry to hear about everyones losses. having your bike nicked sucks big time!

i was wondering if a lot stolen bikes end up at brick lane markets, do any actual cyclists sell their bike there? I figured cyclists would prefer to use ebay or gumtree to get more money. so is it safe to assume that all (or most) fixed gear/track bikes at brick lane are stolen and therefore making it alot easier to identify stolen bikes and for police to ask for proof of purchase from said sellers.

*I dont live in london and have never witnessed brick lane markets bike selling so apologies if this sounds dumb.

  • I was in New York this summer and experienced a valet bike parking system at a flea market (see this: http://www.brownstoner.com/brooklynflea/2008/07/introducingbike_valet_at_the_f.html) which was completely free - not sure how they funded it... It was set up by Transportation Alternatives you can also read about the Great Bike Valet Experiment they did. Perhaps you could set up a service for event organizers, such as the people who run broadway market (whoever that is), and get them to pay you to offer a free service?

  • hmmm... was supposed to quote 'dirkbag' relating to the post above...

Ha - Good luck with that Slaytanic!

I was talking with friends today and I'm more in favour for providing safe, affordable bike parking for cyclists in popular, but crime-ridden areas of London.

Laura from the Bicycle Film Festival reckoned on doing a scheme similar to that during the BFF, where cyclists turn up to an event (or say Broadway Market on a Saturday.) , pay a quid or whatever and lock their bike up in a special area that could be patrolled by a couple of volunteers, feeling safe that some prick won't come along and hack their pride and joy off a fence in broad daylight in a busy area...

In fact - I'm going to go one step further and both of us are looking now into setting up said scheme with Hackney Council, perhaps some of you guys would be interested in participating further?

  • arrgh - dirkbang - sorry!

  • I've seen honey trap bikes in at 2 locations recently.
One a nice Cannondale MTB sitting outside a station "chained" to the railings using a simple 5mm cable lock. You could have stolen the bike by undoing the stem, dropping the forks out and unhooking the lock from the handlebars. A bit obvious, but not cutting tools required.

A titanium Lightspeed at another station locked in exactly the same fashion made me twig that there's clearly some sort of operation going on.

I wish people who have had their bikes vandalized would unlock them though so that they're not blocking a space on the Sheffield stands. Even if the wheel is missing or the saddle's gone, there's still some value to the bike, or even the lock!

  • I have just spoken with Hackney Police - Queensbridge neighbourhood team ..

    Yes - it's on tonight.
You can go along, get your bike registered - which might help get it back if it
is nicked - have your tyres pumped up etc.

It is also a chance to have a "chit chat" about crime in the area, including bike theft. Especially if you have been a victim or witness. I think that includes all of us.

  • This is my story ................ it has been shortened.

where and when did all this happen?

  • Just cannot call the filth ............ unfortunately it is considered very bad form in these parts and leads to lifelong troubles.

do you live in columbia road or columbia? So you know who this chap is. He comes to your house with a gun. And you don't want to call the filth? Look after your family for sure that is number one i understand that. But i cannot see why or how it got to this over some bikes. So this local phycopath is at large to hurt more people. Shame you didn't call the filth to start with? Wouldn't your family be safer with him behind bars on weapons charges? if you actually worked with the filth i'm sure they would want to catch someone like this who sounds very much a highly dangerous individual..

It's easy for me to say sitting behind a key board but i'm sure it would be different when it happens to you. But i would of called the police i know that for sure.

    +1

They have targets to hit in terms of the number of crimes going to prosecution. Their allocation of resources is skewed towards hitting those targets. The way to make bike crime a priority for them is to report EVERYTHING - the volume of bike crime is so large that if everything were properly reported, they would have to start pouring resources in to sorting the problem out.
