Seat post sizing issue

Posted on
  • I am helping a friend build his new bob jackson vigorelli. Everything is going great...

however...the seatpost is very tight in the seat tube and is very difficult to insert deep enough. we are afraid of the seatpost getting stuck.

the seatpost we are using is definitely 27.2. can someone confirm that the seat tube of the vigorelli is indeed 27.2?

what other possible reasons could there be?

  • paint in the seat tube?

  • secondly how deep are you trying to put the seat post down?

  • we were able to pound the seatpost in with a rubber mallet and some cloth...and then we pounded it out with the frame flipped over.

we're trying to put it in about 6 inches...

  • I think paint might have been the culprit - after pounding it in and out a few times, the seatpost goes in exactly how it should.

    thanks for the tip!

  • sounds as though you employed some fairly cowboy tactics but you're welcome.

i would have tried to be patient and taken it to a bike shop and got them to ream it out!

  • Or a bit of wet and dry on a screw driver and take out the paint overspray.
I had a similar problem with a frame - worked out in the end that the seatpost wasn't perfectly round at the bottom and this was causing the problems. Cut off a couple of cms - leaving loads left to go in the frame and it went in fine.

  • So does a Bob Jackson Vigorelli definitely take a 27.2mm seat post then?

  • Yeah, i think so, that's fairly standard for Mercian, Woodrup, BJ. I had a bit of problem at first with my Mercian, but it was just the paint on the inside of the tube. Make sure you grease the seatpost so that it won't seize.

  • Yup, my BJ's 27.2 - the spec should be all on their website non?

    Lube FTW*!

    • non wince
  • Cheers fellas! Much obliged.
