A lot of those who have had their bikes stolen have had a cable lock cut through.
It's been said over and over again...D-Locks and Chains. (Preferably a couple of good d-locks £50+. Locking wheels to frame and to a stand etc).
Thieves want an easy target so don't make it so easy for them.If your bike has what they need, they'll try take it anyway. Saddle, bars, pedals...
These are shit times for bike theft but you still need to do your bit and make it as tough as possible.
Leaving nice bikes locked up in Hackney is asking for it... -

Thefts seem to have really spiked recently- I suppose it's governed by the weather as they can now sell more bikes and parts to people.
Sorry to hear that people are being stung by these arseholes.

I parked my bike corner of essex and ballspond rd on Friday night, between 2000 and 2100. Came back and some cnut had stolen my front wheel. (yellow schwalbe, mavic rim).
my handlebars (easton cut down risers, with yellow motorbike grips that say superbike, one of which has grey tape underneath it). and
my brake and lever.
Went to Brick lane this Sunday but had no luck.I doubt I'll see any of these bits again.

certainly fucking is...just gets worse and worse. Those spastic police need to fucking clamp down on this as it's an ever increasing problem and these fucking nonces are getting away with it. I'm getting another mini evo on pay day and when my bmx is finally complete, i'm leaving my vivalo at home and using the bmx for when i'm out and about on the piss. what a joke, you can't leave your bike anywhere without it getting fucked with. we seriously need to get this gang together to fuck these cunts up. action now!!!

You'd have to sacrifice a lock too, if you leave it unlocked you're not likely to get the right thief. You'll only attract an opportunist.

I disagree with comments like " leaving your bike locked up in Hackney is asking for it....." ... There are lot of people on this forum who dont have a choice and live in East London. I do agree that you need to get the best locks you can afford.
Does anyone know who is in charge of the police for the East London Area??
I think the "sting" is a good idea and will be so easy...I always wanted to catch then, then forcefully lock them to the railings , gag them and put some soft of " I am a bike theif" sign on them ...take a few pictures for the press etc.....

agree with the sting op. but it i think it should be targeted at the more orgaised bike thiefs - the one thatc comes round the george in a van when the curtains close then drives straight to columbia road for a few more.
i don't think "kicking the shit" is the way forward - but if we film the whole thing, so that people can be identified, collect information etc - then we can take the info to the police.
yes, i've been watching the wire.

video camera's / digital slr photo's
as much as i would love to d-lock some little shite to the railing they are trying to nick the bike from
as dave said above false imprisonment doesn't win any favours with the policelook at joseph fritzel ( austrian wierdo ) as a case in point althought he did shag his captive i don't think we'll be going that far !

i went to brick lane for the first time in along time on a sunday morning and walked away feeling ever so dirty.
there was something so very upsetting about seeing a moulton space frame bicycle in super clean condition being sold for 90.00 and being told by one of the vendors stooges that my bike was "really nice man, dats proppa old ennit".
*one day a real rain will come*........
the other thing i found disconcerting was seeing a woman buying for herself a un1pack, i wanted to go up to her and tell her not to. we saw her after at another stall proudly buying a lock, she looked so happy. she was approachable and we gave her some advice on locks but stopped short of telling her that she had made a mistake with the bicycle. its just not in my nature to pee on someones parade.
time to set up an east london sting i think!!
