  • As an employee of the Energy Saving Trust, I'm quite in favour of renewables. It's an important emerging market, if a little faltering.

Alas one of the problems is the issue with costs. There's too much focus on the small scale domestic market where there really needs to be a lot more investment in the business and industrial market to make the domestic uptake inviting and realistic. Investment in the corporate market would mean that more funds would be available for R&D into speeding up the manufacturing time and reducing the manufacturing costs. It's all well and good talking about investment in the future and payback costs but when installation has a high capital cost, which is likely to attract credit costs. This, combined with the current suburban-nomadic culture (people not living in one house for longer than 3-4 years), has really held back the renewables market back for too long.

On the other hand, there are vast amounts of businesses out there that are ideally located for the use and installation of renewables who just aren't on the uptake, even they would be likely to benefit more than the domestic side of the industry.
