Removing brake residue from non-machined rims?

ive got some non-machined deep v's that have been used with brakes - want to get the black residue from the brake off....anyone got any thoughts? i've tried meths, white spirit and lighter fluid.....maybe i just need elbow grease and more htfu??!

try nail varnish remover and a sponge with a rough scouring side.
