you can make belts out of tyres as well, just need to find somewhere that sells buckles.

A road bike tyre doesnt contain enough rubber in it to make it worth recycling!
It will probably also contain a wire bead, synthetic fibre webbing and puncture proof layers.
Dont feel so bad about chucking stuff away. 70% of Birminghams refuse ends up in the Energy from Waste Incinerator at Tyseley.
Just buy tyres that last longer.

I have used an inner tube as bar tape, works ok

it unravels itself after a while as bar tape.
cut the bead off old tyres, and an inch out of the tread so you can fit it inside a tyre with tears in as puncture protection. works a treat

I was thinking the other day (while looking at the old tyres in my garden) that you could make mudguards from them? they are wire beaded so i could just fix them to the stays of my old (broken) mudguards? Anyone ever heard of this?

I don't know, I've never used mudguards,
I just carry a spare pair of pants -

DFP is right on. The energy taken to recycle a bike tyre would be way more than is required to make a new one, and feck all would be reusable. Recycling always seems like a good idea but when you look at the process its not always suited to everything.

http://tyrebelt.co.ukhave been thinking about doing this, you can get a job lot of buckles on e-bay, but you also need a way to rivet the belt to the buckle.

a rivetter ?
I've got one, its a bit like a hole punch
I've read that rubber tyres can be recycled, does anyone know where can i take some in birmingham?
or does anyone have any other uses of old bulging tyres? i know you can make belts out of inner tubes but dont know much about the (re)uses of tyres.
