My thoughts exactly, Oliver.
I love Calvin & Hobbes. One of the best comic strips ever (not that that'll be news to anyone). I don't find the cartoon in the OP depressing, but hopeful and uplifting (except that the quality of the drawing isn't anywhere near C&H, of course).
old farts.

Calvin might be better off getting rid ;)

Please don't compare C&H and Garfield. Just don't.

I've always loved The Far Side--absolutely brilliant stuff. Like Calvin & Hobbes, it has a deeper aspect.
I can't find too many of my favourites on-line, but this is one.

I've always loved this one.
I've painted this one A2 size in acrylics for my sons room. Says everything from the above sketch without the words.

It reminds me of the full colour pages that Watterson did with watercolours, mostly in the larger ones though..

Yes, the intention is clearly to emulate those. But his drawings are still miles better. He has such a good line.

I used to use C+ H when I was a kid to decorate those posters that you always had to do for school to explain things in Geography.

^^ that is just tragic!
After seeing this I went and watched a film called 'the boy in stripey pyjamas' to cheer me up. Luck would have it that it actually turned out to be about the holocaust.
I wept.
