Weird local bike shops

  • Have you got a weird local bike shop? Went into mine this morning. It has among its stock a brand new Raleigh bomber frame (circa 1983) and a brand new Peugeot kids racing bike from about 1990.

When I asked about handlebars they went into the back of the shop and dragged a box down from the highest shelf. I was then presented with a pair of 3TTT bars (scuffed and scratched with tape residue all over them) and told that "John bought a bike but didn't drop handlebars because of his back. They're new though." Then told I could have them for £29.99. I then spot some nos SR Sakae Modolo bars "Oh, you can have them for £5"

  • Was that Balfe's in Dulwich? Could have sworn I saw a Bomber in the window last time I went past and thought it weird!

  • Sounds great. Ask them for some Airlites next time you're in, high flange track 32/40 hole. Please.

  • No, it's in Ashford in Middlesex...

  • I would love to go in there and remove all the new bikes and parts, then see what they've got left over. The owner told me they had a flood when they first opened 25 years ago and that lots of stock is still in their garage. Seen in a cabinet recently was 3 campag record aero seatposts, pre dual pivot campag super record brakes and a pair of super record pedals with toe clips (wasn't allowed to but them as a bolt was missing and they "couldn't be sold incomplete").

  • I went into each of the four bike shops we have in my home town (one of them the local Halfords) looking for 1/8" joining links.
In the three independants I was greeted by miserable, long faced, unhelpful, mechanicaly ignorance. One twerp even assured me that there was no difference between 3/32 and 1/8!
And this was not a one off occurence. Whenever I pop in for the odd bit or piece they act as if its all too much effort.
(Before x mas I wanted a USE Joystick maxx, a not inconsiderable purchase, yet you would think I had asked to have a shit on their floor. The guy all but threw it at me.)

However, when I relented and went to Halfords the young chap knew exactly what type of link I meant and, as there were none on display, produced them from a stock room all with a smile.

What is it with small independants? If you don't roll up on £3K of the very latest 30 gear carbon electronic high tech wizardry they behave as if they are doing you a favour just talking to you.

    Rant over.

    Toodle pip

  • Finsbury cycles in Finsbury park (duh) are a quality lbs. All their in stock new bikes are shit but they have any random old part you could ever want. Stuff is found by argument between the boss and the mech.
They're searching the cellar this week for 27" rims for me. He reckons they've also got some nos 60's, 70's frames but cant remember where he put them about a decade ago.
Nice blokes, good for small parts and might come up trumps for old kit as well. Watch this space.

Good banter whenever you go in and nice and friendly

  • el squire was telling me about a good lbs in Deptford. Can't remember what it's called so less than usefull...

  • Whoops, that didn't go as well as planned.

  • Hi Big Al, do you know the name of the shop in Ashford? I would like to give them a call regarding that Bomber Frame. Many Thanks Mat

  • Cycle Warehouse in Greenwich had some old bikes when I last went in, upstairs hidden behind some ladies bikes was a complete Baines Flying Gate, 2xChoppers, Raleigh Lenton plus loads of other odds and ends the young chap serving said he thought they might be for sale but wasn't sure as the boss wasn't in!!

  • Cheers Hugh, i have emailed them but as yet no response. If anyone has any Bomber bits or bikes i would be very interested. Thanks.

  • The one in Deptford is called Witcomb Cycles - they're the only frame builder in London at the moment (yes, including Claud Butler, who send their business to Witcomb or elsewhere). They're a quirky little shop but don't expect to find lots of stock on display in there.

btw the bike in the window of Balfe's Bikes in East Dulwich is a Raleigh Burner. Is nice...

    : P

  • they had a lovely lilac/chrome track bike just inside the door last time i was there. honestly the nicest bike i've seen in a long time.
