    and furthermore (ⓒcornholio blackheart): saying "rag it" about an old carlton like this is a bit like saying 'rag it" about someone's gran. it might be fun for about a second,but when everything starts making strange noises, cracking and falling apart you're going to seriously regret ever messing around with the vintage tubing. the lady deserves more respect.

  • I've just aquired myself an old Carlton Clubman. any thoughts on converting it to fixed, and any issues i may have (other than - don't do it, your wasting your time...)? Have a feeling the bottom bracket could be interesting...

  • Hmm, I'm just finishing a very similar project. Costs so far,
    Strip and powder coat £40
    Cottered crankset/chainset £10
    Cotter pins £2
    chain £10
    27" wheels, hubs (pair) £45
    brakes and levers £20
    bar and stem £40
    27" tyres (pair) £10
    seatpost and clamp £12
    Saddle (used brooks B17 narrow) £26
    Bearings £2
    Headset £18
    New forks - F'ing seized stem! £22
    The original purchase price of £50

    That's £ 308!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    All NOs or new stuff of the 'bay or lbs , but even so not expensive individual components, it all adds up though. Still when do you stop? Probably before you start I reckon.

    Oh also bar tape, grease, lug lining one shot enamel another £20, plus transfers £20, and rim tape £4. My wife's gonna kill me. lots of fun though.

  • Oh crap also 16t sprocket, new bottom bracket cups, clips, toestraps.......... I salvaged the original pedals though.

  • Just to dig up and hijack this thread (I just found it), would you all feel the same about converting this bike to fixed? It's a 20", I think. To be honest, I'm not sure what kind of shape it's in. I've ridden it a little (removed some components. Thrown the chain onto one read sprocket.

    I'm assuming new cranksets and wheels are needed, which raises the spectre of what sort of BB would fit and the cost of it. It'd be nice to keep things cheap.

    Leave your cranks alone if you want to do this really cheaply. Buy a rear wheel (or pair), some toe clips & straps, and put the front brake back on if you are new to riding a fixed-wheel bicycle.

    That's my 2p.

    yes, that is very possible indeed. spend a decent amount of money on wheels and move these to another frame when you have the money for it.
    people on this forum can help you build wheels (just search for the thread) which will save you money. Dogsballs built mine. Very good.

  • I did something similar when i built my first fix. my advice would be to buy a fuji track, the ride quality will be so much better than anything you can do with that.
