I cycled to Oostende from somewhere in Germany to find... the Oostende ferry does not take bicyclists - I think because they don't take foot passengers either.
The easiest way around that I found is just to go via Calais - it's about 60 miles of easy riding, through some quite weird Belgian coastal resorts.
