Older Peugeots, which are the best?

  • Going to start the next bike build and am looking for an older Peugeot. I know that not all Peugeots are created equal, and also that it's hard to sift the wheat from the chaff.

I know also that people don't necessarily like Peugeots. Don't care.

Does anyone know which models to look out for? I don't need super quality just the ability to find the lighter ones from the leaden ones.

    Thanks!

  • px 10's are meant to be the best

    team editions / pro riders

  • +1 on the PX-10.

  • can't say i've ever seen one though ? for sale or otherwise
i think pj from the forum had / has one
niow to be seen in brissle

  • Thanks, I knew I should have done a search on here first.

And if PX10s are probably not available, what's another line to look out for?

  • they do a few 531 tubing bikes and lots of carbolite / cheap steel
look for the tube types unfortunately can't advise names of models
you can pick up old cheap pugs on ebay for 20-30 quid
i bought a couple a year back or so for use as wet weather beaters
they dontated chains brakes handlebars wheels to other projects eventually

  • There's a thread in Mechanics and Fixin with a lot of crap in it (my Peugeot included) but there's also some good links to retro Peugeot sites.

  • I'm in a better mood today than yesterday, so here you go:

  • Cue Ed posting a pic of his old Peugeot..

  • and his blb bj

  • Dave Yates's verdict on them was "nice lugs, variable brazing" IIRC - he's had a few to repair that just didn't have enough brass flowed into the lugs. I'd imagine most of the ones that are going to break probably have done by now, but if I were buying one I'd have a more-than-usually-careful poke at the joints in case anything was starting to come adrift.

  • Even a cheap carbolite 103 one is reasonably light once you change it to a fixed wheel bicycle, just find one in decent condition, if it reynolds material, bonus point.

  • Just look for the badge:

Ok, so it wont really say awesome! But any of the peugouts that are made of decent tubing tend to be really good.

    True.

What's the typical eBay price for these? I.e. how much should us newbie's be prepared to spend should we come across one?

  • The thing is, from what ive seen. Due to the demand for old road frames for converting, the basic carbolite (and worse) peugouts and other bottom end frames go for the same price as 531 decent frames.

  • as long you can find them outside ebay, they should only cost about 20 to 80 quid for a fully build bike, I got a wonderful bargain (sadly did a puppy killing) of an completely original Peugeot bike that look like it came out of the factory for 70 quid a while ago.

ask neighbour, family, friends, work mate, local newspaper, jumble sales, etc. chance are you might able to get one for free (especially if it came from a relative or friends).

  • i had a carbolite pug (still do but it's a bit knackered). it was actually a very nice ride and not that heavy. thing is, you don't really want to throw too much money or quality parts at one. so if you're looking to convert and you don't already have bits lying around, you might be better to look around for a reasonably priced 531 frame.

    things to look for:

plastic spoke protectors, suicide levers, lugless - indicate carbolite or worse tubing, low-end bikes.
flick the tube and see if it pings/resonates - 531 will.

it's also true that on ebay at least they go for stupid money. i saw a carbolite pug sell for 150 quid. i got the 531 bike in the pic below for 100 quid on ebay last week... ok so the tyres don't match etc. but it's a nice frame so i'm willing to spend some money on it...

That's a shame. Ah well at least you have some fond memories I hope?! Also that pic points out a couple of things I forgot to say - I mentioned what indicates a low-end pug but not the other way around. On the flip-side, the low-end generally did not have quick release. Chrome or half-chromed forks are also a pretty good indication that the bike was towards the middle or top of the range. So with those rules of thumb you can get a rough idea of whether it's worth trying to identify a particular bike...

  • i just built up my new peugeot (531 awesomeness) track frame, feels reall nice to ride. apologies for the poor quality webcam photo. It needs the wheels relaced (radial front and 3 cross on the back) and a respray perhaps, either red or black. big cogs are so 2009!

Nice, not a fan of the green on the fork though. Respray whole thing black/red? What about radial front and crows foot back? I think crows foot looks nicer and makes some very tough wheels.
