If you are undertaking and going past a junction on the left you should always be expecting some vehicle to come across your path into the road on the left. You should slow right down and activeley make sure there is nothing coming before passing.
If I blasted by in these situations I would get hit every day!
Count yourself lucky it wasnt more serious. A car even when looking carefully (dont expect them to) can not see very far if there is a que of traffic. It will not be able to see an approached cyclist undertaking. At the time when the driver makes the decision to turn right into the road on your left, the cyclist (you) would still be many metres away hiden behind traffic. By the time they lurch forward you wouldve hit them.
