Oliver can probably correct me where Im wrong, but I don't think that turning across the flow of traffic dispenses with the requirement to make sure there's nothing coming the other way. Almost the exact same thing happened to me the other day, between the foundry and old street heading west, I had to jump up the kerb to avoid being hit. The driver looked at me as though I was the most stupid person in the world.
Put your brake back on for sure, at least for the visit to the Police station
