Everybody, even the most experienced cyclist, will be able to benefit from cycle training to the National Standard. It's well worth doing, and there are a lot of opportunities for free training, so make sure you take it up. You'll enjoy your cycling a great deal more after that.
You don't seem to ask a specific question in your post, though. Did you mean to?
Cheers, Oliver. No, no particular question. Being a trainer (in a completely different area) I agree that even experienced people can do with training - it's surprising what you don't know and what you can learn - although in this particular case there was very little that could be done, I couldn't see the gap the traffic had left, and the car driver really should have been checking for vehicles in the bus lane, and as there was no junction there, there was no reason to expect a car coming at me from my right (apart from the fact you should always expect the unexpected on London streets). Naturally I'm ultra careful about checking for possible gaps in traffic now!
I have to say, I've enjoyed about six years (five of 'em not on fixed) cycling in London, accident free (apart from not getting unclipped in time, ahem) and am currently loving being back on my bike again. Confidence based on awareness and experience is everything. Thanks for the advice again.
