well we seem to have two people doing the halting, although it might happen quicker if we both just fucked off...

Isaiah 2:14
"And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up"
57:4 Against whom - Consider whom it is that you mock and scoff, when you deride God's prophets. A seed - A generation of liars, whose practices contradict your professions, who deal deceitfully both with God and men.
Interesting.

When I brake I use both brakes but shift my weight backwards over the rear of the bike so I get more purchase with my rear wheel. I find this slows me down alot faster than letting my rear wheel nearly lift off the ground and making the front do all the work.
I posted the question originally cos a car pulled out on me and a mate (who rides a fixie) while we were riding and chatting side by side (stupid i know...), I broke and stopped with time to spare but he didnt make it and 'skid stopped/face planted' straight into the side of the car. He was alright but I was surprised with how long it took him to stop cos he s a very experienced rider.
I thought maybe the damp weather affected things. Thanks for the replies and info.

I ride a single speed freewheel btw and he rides fixed with a front brake.

I ride SS brakeless and just use the backs of cars and buses as a brake. I'm always covered in blood

shouldn't be a surprise really (even thought I don't have much to says in that).

it is a legal requirement to have control of both wheels of your bike.
if you really don't understand why, please pause to consider that there may be something you've overlooked / not thought of.... ask yourself: what if all those engineers and mechanics over the 100 years of evolving bicycles were actually right !
is it responsible to start talking about physics and justifying your illegal, dangerous actions?
if you succeed in convincing some poor innocent who then dies because they swallowed your preaching, how will you feel then?
No brake, no brain. we all need to spread this message.
if you have no front brake on your fixed wheel, the motorist who hits you cannot be prosecuted. if you have perpetuated the fallacy that its okay to ride without adequite control mechanisms, you share the blame for the consequences of that fallacy.
grow up and become aware of your responsibility to promote safety and to oppose ignorance.
sorry to preach, but it really fucking pisses me off !xx -

People ride all sorts of bikes. Some are really sensible. Some are totally batshit.
What matters to me isn't so much the physical setup of the bike, as the way that it's ridden. Sure, if you put a total dick onto a SS with just one brake and he rides off at 25 mph down Holland Park Avenue, he's going to smear himself all over the road because he's riding like a muppet.
Me, I sometimes ride a penny farthing. It's got a brake on the front wheel, but it's largely cosmetic so I never use it. If I do anything more than feather it, I'll more than likely take a header, you see. So effectively, I'm riding a brakeless anachronism - and in your world, I'm illegal and dangerous.
Actually, riding an penny, brakes or not, is perfectly legal. Riding a track bike with no brakes isn't really adhering to the letter of the law, but here's the thing; If you don't ride like a dick, you won't get into trouble.
When I'm not riding my penny, I commute on a heavy old fixed with two brakes, mudguards and a rack. You know what? If I rode that like a dick, I'd be in far more danger of hurting myself and other people than on my track bike.
It's a bit like the helmet argument. Learn to ride a fucking bicycle properly and don't interfere with what I want to do because I make informed choices, okay?

Legal understanding fail. In fairness, that's a very common fail! Civil liability is one thing, and I think there are some civil lawyers about on here, but no brake = no prosecution is certainly not the law.Leaving aside your spelling of "adequate", or indeed the definition of that word, it's up to individuals to decide whether they want to obey the law and ride with a front brake.
This does NOT mean that fixie-brakeless-messengers are fair game for cabbies / mini-cabbies / trucks / bus drivers / general assorted twats to squash flat with their death-machines. Breaking the law does not mean that you immediately lose every single one of your rights, including your right to cycle along without getting killed. If breaking the law meant losing your rights, this wouldn't be a very nice country to live in. Thank the sweet baby Jesus that you DON'T lose your rights by breaking the law in some small way.

Agreed, well I agree with your whole post, but my whole resounding reason behind starting this thread was because of muppets that clearly can't ride a bicycle properly, who are putting themselves on bike setups that they can't control safely.
Anyways, i've given up ranting about it these days and resided myself to the fact that idiots will do these things no matter what I think/say/do, so I just need to laugh at them when I get the opportunity, and accept it as a form of light entertainment :) -

yeah fixed without foot retention is pretty stupid also, unless you don't plan on exceeding 10mph!....even then still stupid. Personally I use double straps and 4 gate clips, I ride brakeless but get awesome leverage from that pedal setup and have absolutely no problems stopping from high speed.

Unless your chain brakes...
That's a very rare occurrence. Have you ever snapped a chain during transmission?
-
• #522
Ummm.
When I was nailed by the police- hit not fined they immediately said something about my bike bieng brakless and lightless, regardless of the fact my light was somewhere in the road.
That is the last decent memory I have of a period stretching several months.
why I still don't wear a helmet except in london is beyond me. -

Unless your chain breaks...
True but as Charco says that is indeed a rare occurence.
That's a very rare occurrence. Have you ever snapped a chain during transmission?
Indeed
FootJam in the backwheel bmx stylee, safest option in that situation, I've had 2 chains snap on me in the last 8 months, one of them endured a whole winter of abuse and shit on the roads though, and the other was just a cheap shitty chain, that I shouldn't have bought, both times I managed to stop safely without incident.
Although i'll probably spend out on a decent track chain soon, when funds allow, maybe a nice izumi or something, and then actually bother to clean it when it gets covered in crap from bad weather. -

No, but it does happen and I wouldn't want to have no other way to stop if it did.

Just use your face.
But do we need one or two people?
Maybe we should start a new thread, it's really annoying when I see threads being brought to a halt with just one person, it's a bit irresponsible and in the case of an emergency it's much safer to have two people.
