  • Not if it's been posted yet, but Fernandez & Wells in Soho they make some kickass cofee, albeit at disgusting prices... http://www.fernandezandwells.com/beak.php

they're actually opening another store in soho on one of the cross ally ways. i think it's called st mary's court. if you're in that area you're better off going to milkbar or flat white anyway!

  • Smithy: New Tamper?

No, seriously, I've ordered a new one so you can have the Gaggia one soon.

  • you haven't ordered one of those have you?
what's wrong with using the bottom of a cup :-)

  • Straw pole: who doesn't own some of Hippy's hand me down coffee paraphernalia?

It doesn't feel like an exclusive club ;)

EDIT and the tags on this thread still make laugh

Ha! Of course not. No, I ordered a cheapie.
Slightly sexier than the plastic one but does the same thing.

  • "boringest" = topp efort dood!

I actually find this thread more interesting than most of the others. Maybe we could discuss brakes to liven things up..

  • True Hippy. I have learned loads from bombcup and Ross, I love reading through this thread.

Mechanically, fixed gear bikes are easy. Making good coffee is difficult.

  • Oh yeah. I joined the Hippy's Coffee-castoffs Army. Come on Mouse, sign the fuck up.

  • At least it's not "hippy's soiled undies army" or something..

  • "I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member"
    Groucho Marx.

  • I never used to be a coffee drinker, and if I'm honest, when I started taking it seriously I still wasn't much of a coffee drinker - I used to love the (admittedly pretentious) idea of having a moka pot and an espresso machine in the kitchen. When I started using them more, the complexity of making a good espresso appealed to my meticulous nature, so the challenge of getting good crema was always what kept me going.

I can now detect undertones of berry, vanilla, chocolate etc in different varieties of coffee, while as time has gone on, I've been able to taste undertones of urine in the Starbucks filter coffee that I always used to swear by.

It was probably the height of geekiness when I went running in Cornwall and went up a steep as fnark hill just to go past the Origin roastery in Constantine.

I do still love my tea though - and feel no overall sense of loyalty to either. Tea or coffee? Why not both?

    It's ok. I don't accept anyone's member..

  • Tea or coffee? Why not both?

Because tea is fetid arse milk.

    There endeth the lesson.

Well, if you like fetid arse milk...

i'm at a trade show in cornwall at the moment and i had a nice quick chat with Tom from origin today, they're roasting a bit of coffee themselves at the moment on a 12k Probat(i think that's what he said) it was really nice, i was really impressed.

he said they're also looking for someone to look after origin customers from london to bristol as the last guy they had doing it has gone off to help open an espresso bar in bath run by Lee Meyers and that other england rugby player that got banned for being a cokehead, absolutely amazing.

  • Tristan Stephenson of Origin Coffee association got through the semi finals of the UKBC today and is competing in the final tomorrow. Good luck Tristan. He's got a great blog for all things coffee and alcohol.

I wouldn't even think I could do this at this point in my life, but what does it take?

Having had a few problems at work this past year, I'm wanting to take a more positive direction. It's been a while since I've thought 'yeah - I'd love to do something like that...'

    Coffee and booze.. wicked.

I just wish I had a bar at home.

i'm not overly sure. i'd imagine it's a mixture of barista training, trouble shooting for existing customers, having some basic machine knowledge, maybe being capable of installing a machine (even i can manage this) and probably some sales.
apart from sales i bet you could learn of all that shit in a few days if you're not an idiot. if you want any help give me a shout.

This time last year I was a plasterer and pretty pissed off. I had learned my shit about coffee just as a kind of hobby.

The job I am doing now is pretty similar to what Origin are talking about and I fucking love it. Look forward to it almost every day. Had no previous experience, just enthusiasm. Saw the ad and thought that looks fucking great, I'd be happy with that. And I am.

    Give it a go.

  • Give it a go.

E-mail sent - what's the worst that could happen...?

  • Good luck Mooks. Sounds like you could do with the change.

  • That's the spirit, good luck old boy.

  • can someone please explain to me the difference between a flat white and a latte? first time i ever heard that term was when flat white opened on berwick street. i've still never ordered one.

  • A Flat White differs from a Latte in that it is served in a smaller ceramic cup[2], whereas a traditional latte is served in a glass with the espresso shot poured over the steamed milk. A Latte can also be served in a bowl or a larger cup requiring more milk, obscuring the complex flavours of the coffee.
