Sturmey archer spacing & chainslack questions

Posted on
  • sorry its not a singlespeed fixed quetsion but:

On a v cheap pub bike I am buliding my frame is 120mm, my strurmey archer hub is 115mm. Am I safe to just do the nuts up tight so they squeeze in the dropouts on each side?

    Also

On my charge plug I cant seem to get my chain very tight. I pull the wheel as taught as poss and do the nuts up as tight as poss but still after a 20 mile ride it gest slacker than when I done it up - why is this? and what can I do to stop this?

    many thanks

    1. 5mm is prob acceptable for a pub bike.
    2. Sounds like the locknuts must be moving relative to the frame. This could ne caused by
      a) the nuts not being done up tight enough - how long a lever are you using?
      b) wear on the frame dropouts.
      c) the locknuts on the axle usually have knurled bits to grip the frame but they can get smoothed off.
      d) your transmission is totally worn out.
e)You are just hellishly powerful and should enter the world track champs in Poland in two weeks.

    hope that helps.
