The gold is a titanium-nitride coating, it is many many times harder than steel, my chain and cog were virtually brand new after a year of spinning (got pictures somewhere on this forum, might try and dig them up for you).

Not only will your parts not wear out as fast but the drive chain will be smoother for longer - and smoother makes for silence.

Having just got that one from 14 Bikes Co, they're surprisingly light! should flare well on the new project.
