• ok, so after the terrible credit crunch has screwed my finances royally and a severe lack of space i am having to let the dave russell (reliably informed but not guaranteed - where can i check a frame no.?) frame i got from this forum go...

Custom lugged steel frameset, Reasonably light (4.5lbs) and with a nice zing to the tubeset.

Quite minimalist handcut lugs with triangular cutouts on the head and seattube. Nervex-style BB shell. Interesting seat cluster - the seatpost is secured by means of a grub screw. Two sets of bottle bosses, D/T shifter bosses, pump peg, chain pip, internally routed rear brake cable. 1" headtube, 130mm dropout spacing.

60cm C-T, 58cm TT. Angles unknown. Sprayed by Argos in a metallic purple (like the Cadbury's colour) and never built up, but hung in a workshop so has some marks here and there. it has an Argos paintjob that would cost £110 to get done today.

i have gone to the effort of getting it some beautiful chrome forks, cinelli bars and stem, shimano cranks/rear derrailer brakes and levers.. also a green brooks comp(?) saddle cut like a swallow

i have planned to treat it to a silver king headset and green brooks bar tape, also needs braze on shifters/pedals/front mech and cables/chain... otherwise good to go!

it looks so gorgeous and i know if i finish the build i will never be able to say goodbye

i think £200 plus postage is a bargain price and would hope ebay would double that if this fails...

yorkshire area if you want to collect

  • This frame has a beautiful and perfect finish.

  • she does!, very sad to see her go, btw i have some decals on the way at some point to be included

  • sure its not "a something else" frame that had "fatty Russell" stickers on it? I don't recall grub screw fixing on Dave's frames, but could be a later version. "Shot in" seat stays were around 1970ish and later. The practice of respraying and re-stickering was a well known feature then, and to this day too.

Yes, I did know him/meet him/etc as he used to be a supplier to Rohan's Cycles where I worked as a student, and "fatty" was his nickname.

In those days a shop cpould order frames from anyone and have their name stuck on them eg Edwards of Camberwell was one of those frame suppliers- I had three from them with Rohan stickers put on them.

  • it was apparently bought at the dave russell jumble after he died but somebody off the forum emailed me to say he thought it was a russell frame, i wouldnt like to certainly say i guess without checking the frame number...

how would i go about that?

  • hmm, the serial is...

    Y5118595

i have been told that dave russell frames were al the initials of the person he was building for folowed by the date of finishing the frame - so that doesn't compute

so scratch the dave russell thing! i know lots of bike get sold through shops under different names, my condor as badged up phoenix cycles when i got it

  • heroic levels of noise and banding in your pics
is that a chrome fronted sugden amp on the floor?

  • phone pics... kaka...

its not a sugden no, an edmund early 90's jobby... is nice though!

  • looks like the photos were taken on ISO1600 film
    grainy

  • dodgy camera phone?

  • thanks DMC! forgot about the original link

  • How much for the Wild Thing? He's lovely.

  • not for sale am afraid... but he is lovely...

cant wait for the spike jonze film next year...

  • Damn, that is a lovely frame and you're right, it's a bargain at £200. I suspect it's slightly too big for me, but even if it wasn't there is no way I'd be allowed that in the house at the moment. :(

  • not for sale am afraid... but he is lovely...

cant wait for the spike jonze film next year...

Where did you get him!? I really really want one.

  • cant wait for the spike jonze film next year...

it's fucked...... the studio won't let him release his cut, they think it's too 'dark' for kids, thus losing their target audiance.... what a crock of shit... Jonze RULES!

i want him to show the Macaframa boys how to do it properly!

  • it will find a way am sure... he has too many fans, plus dave eggers is releasing another book to go alongside!

and anyone else for the bike? am so poor i can't afford pancakes today!!!

  • not sure they will be available now, i bought it maybe 5 years ago during the where the wild things are re-release? pretty sure they were limited edition only

  • huh? how do you fit the seatpost in that thing? if I understand the photos correctly there is no bolt or screw or anything? not looking to buy it but just curious.

  • its a grub screw from the rear of the frame that holds the seatpost tight... very nice detail!

  • bumpety bump

  • bumpy bumpy

  • any offers? am feeling i need to keep it now!

  • keep it. They're not getting any less rare..

at least two in west yorkshire though
