Batteries

  • Figure we're all going through the batteries with the evenings as they are. Given this, figure it's worth asking a few questions

Do you get your money's worth when you buy more expensive batteries or is it a fool's game and your much better off buying Hyundai or whatever other batteries are on offer down at the pound store?

A more specific question, does anyone have a good value source for lithium ion batteries (AA)- needing to pick some up for a Dinotte light and keen to hear recommendations

  • I always go for Duracell. Seem like a pretty good price-to-life ratio. Dunno about l-ion AAs though, I'm afraid.
EDIT: Clearly this is a lie. I always have acetylene lamps on the trusty Dawes as I never pedal fast enough to blow the flame out.

  • Yes, the cheap ones do sod all for me, even in low power things like Xbox 360 controllers. I taxed some Duracell MEGACELL+++LOL.531 (I think) AA batteries from work, they last at least 5 times as long.

  • Duracell's are always good but I put some Sony Stamina Plus and they've lasted ages!

7dayshop is pretty good if you are bulk buying though.

  • We sell Duracell Procell batteries at my place of work... same spec as standard Duracell but work out cheaper because of bulk packaging. Usually initially charged to slightly higher capacity as well. Box of 10 for about £3 in either AA or AAA. Actually if anyone wants any, give me a shout.

That sounds like a deal 8 Duracell AAA in Sainsburys is about £6.

  • rechargables

  • any suggestions on best brands and prices for rechargable?

  • Uniross rechargeable batteries, will last a lot longer anything over 2000mh

    try http://www.picstop.co.uk/
    or www.7dayshop.com

  • Posted before, but no complaints with these either. Get mentioned a lot on bike forums.

Or the INSTANT version, if it's for a light that gets used over a longer period, rather than in one 'big go'.

    Good value.

  • recharge all the way. i run 2 electron spots on the front to shoot lasers into drivers eyes (8xAAA) and a rear something with 2xAAA. all various brand rechargeables, just watch for the capacities. cheap ones are usually around 700mah, but decent/good ones are 1000mah or more. AA batteries are higher capacities.

anyway, get a recharger and save some landfill space.

  • I just bought 16 of the Vapextech 2900mAh batteries (the ones BMMF mentioned):
    http://www.vapextech.co.uk/acatalog/High_Power_Consumer_Batteries.html

These are replacing the tired 2700mAh ones of the same brand I've been caning for a couple of years now in my Dinotte. I use non-rechargeables when I'm in a fix and can't find any charged NiMH batts.

  • sell me four

  • Uniross recharger £15 at dixons FTW.

  • got a charger

  • http://www.component-shop.co.uk is a good place to buy batteries and chargers.

  • I've got one of these now. It analyses battery power and stuff and does a better job of charging, can recover 'dead' batteries, etc.

What I've found so far is that my 2900mAh Vapextech batteries are nothing like 2900mAh. The highest capacity I've found so far is about 1900mAh.

I have tested some Energizer 2650mAh batteries that are newer and they rate to about 2400mAh I think.

The Vapextech are not new batteries and have been charged numerous times with the 30min MEGA SUPER WONDER charger or whatever it's called from Vapourtech so it could be that they've just lost some of the capacity but I wonder what they test at when new?

  • Check this out. Not sure if April fools so googled it..

    http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/p/15487/brunton-hydrogen-reactor-charger

  • Theres a few of them, the Brunton one is probably the best/ most robust. Theres meant to be a string of retail outlets offering cheap recharging facilities for the hydrogen cells but have yet to see one.

  • Anyone want two of these batteries: RCR123A Li Ion 3.7V
    http://flashlight.nitecore.com/product/rcr123a-li-ion-battery-nl166

The stupid fucking things don't fit in a Flare light.

  • any suggestions on best brands and prices for rechargable?

Any recommendations? Is Vapextech the go-to brand?

  • Eneloops are great. You can pick them up cheaper at Ikea - the 'Ladda' batteries are the same, just rebranded.

  • Cheers for the tip!
