  • coppi: never rode against anyone but my own lazyness ... so I doubt I can compete ... give me another year, but even then I doubt it. I'm a single-speed, OTP-riding, freewheeling, lycra-fitted, helmet-wearing commuter ... and on weekends I just cruise around because I'm bored amd my g/f wants to sleep in. So I doubt I am fast, in any respect, really ...

no but thats exactly the point your riding against yourself and the clock, then the next time you try to do a better. its time trial. but mostly/essentially it should be a laugh.

  • Don't tell BMMF.. he vowed never to climb again after he was beaten by a fat Aussie*..

Why not? Sano mentioned to me that along with the sprints there were mumblings of other competitive lfgss events.. lots of people are "training" these days so I'm sure there's some competitive urges building.

*I did promise I'd never let this die. ;)

  • Can manage Gypsy on 46:18, but Anerley is worse..

Anerley from the very bottom to the very top is the biggest cunt of a hill in London I have ever seen / experienced.

  • canonbie road or is it netherby road which is just off forest hill road can also be quite severe. at the top you feel as though you should be given a tshirt with red dots all over it
canonbie rise (get it right). ouch. also, the top bit of the hill heading from hornimans museum towards crystal palace. absolute bitch after a couple of spliffs/pints. vicars hill in ladywell... jerningham road is a bit of a cnut when you're carrying a bag full of shopping on your back and nappies on your risers. vesta road isn't as long but it can be a pain in the backside sometimes.

anybody tackled the path that cuts up the side of nunhead cemetary on a fixed? bumpy.

  • coppi: hmm, you got a point ... but how much of a laugh is it for others to be waiting for me and then hear me moaning when I finally caught up :p

I have never participated in any LFGSS rides or drinks ... maybe I'm not flash / fit / fast enough ... there seem to be quite a few of you around in and close to SE15? Maybe it's time to get involved, with an easy cruising ride or something like that first. Would give me a bit of an idea where I stand. I'll keep thinking about it.

  • [cough]........lfgss winter hill climb championship...........[/cough]

as there ever been one, who would be interested. man/woman and machine against the hill and the clock. there's a nice long drag out kent way called cudham lane that would be perfect unless there are other suggestions.......... just a thought.

Good idea. I hate hills and I think I'd give it a go. A fixed only hill climb, back to the old days. Would be especially fun for those who don't have the parts/inclination to change their gear beforehand, or better yet, do change their gears, but ride all the way out to the climb on 56"s.

Chalkpit Lane from Oxted would be a true test. Even BMMF might agree that it's a hill then.

Cudham's barely a hill, and way too long for a hill climb, Chalkpit's much more like it. Short but steep.

Good spectating for those wise enough not to attempt it then a nice opportunity for a pint somewhere off clarks lane, which is the highest road in the South East of England, and as previously mentioned, has some pretty fantastic views.

Could do it sooner rather than later, though hill climbing is usually an end of season thing.

  • yeah JC fixed wheel hill climb old scool stylee for sure and sonner rather than later.

next thing maybe is to decide on a hill that will not seem like too much of a nightmare and scare people off taking part. how long a climb do we want and should it be short and sharp or gradual with a sharp mountain face section. personally i think it should be a climb not so gruelling that anybody has to walk,,,,,suffer but not walk. :-)
if we go out to kent earlyish in the mornings its still has a misty feel going on

  • andyp: Well, last year waterloo bridge did qualify as hill in my books ;)

Was talking to one of the cyclists at work about the hills i do on my commute (nothing massive, just balham and one in stoneleigh, which feels massive as it's at the end of my commute) and he seriously mentioned how hard going over tower bridge was! FFS!

I built my fixed in Seattle... they've got proper hills out there...

  • forest hill road is on my daily commute. It does get quite tough at the top, especially if you take the right turn. mange it ok running 46x18 (noticebaly easier than 46x16), spin like a bastard on the way down in the mornings though, as long as that bloody lolly pop lady doesnt decide to jump out in front of me.

  • Head straight out along the A2 to Shoters Hill and up to Welling. Not very steep but several hills in a row, of a fair distance.

  • anybody tackled the path that cuts up the side of nunhead cemetary on a fixed? bumpy.

Yep, it was recommended to me as a quiet route into town by a chap who lives on Canonbie Road (yes, Road rather than Rise) and used to ride fixed about 50 years ago. He's a nice chap but he must have been remembering what the Brockley Footpath was like in some long-disappeared golden age, as I found it was muddy, rocky, overgrown with nettles and brambles and decidedly bike-unfriendly.

  • Try this one......? Caterham. Church Hill ??

I dont know what the gradient is, but it scares the hell out of me !

Have to try this Khor.... ?

  • You bunch of wusses. Those aren't hills you've listed, just minor bumps. A dose of HTFU is definitely needed.

    Indeed

    Biggin Hill.. anyone?

  • I don't like Biggin Hill because of the slight bend about halfway up which leads to cars passing at speed on the far left hand side of the road. I've had one too many scary incidents there.

  • My new route home means going up and over Blackheath ... and there's no nice way up from Greenwich. Maze Hill is pretty sharp.

    vanborough hill ftw!

but coming down the other side is great

heh... that's about a minute from my house. have attempted it, got off and walked about halfway though ...

managed Dog Kennel Hill earlier though on my way to Camberwell. Still hurting.

The main avenue hill through greenwich park?

  • The main avenue hill through greenwich park?

    +1

If you get lucky you can race the guy running with a lorry tyre tied to his waist. He knows how to mtfu!

  • i saw him pulling it up it today! didnt quite no what to think.

Have you done Shooters Hill fixed? So far I've bottled out and gone round via either Plumstead Common or Eltham High Street on my random trips out from Welling (SSFG ghost town).

I think spare tube and CO2 inflator is a better bet............

  • coppithat, hippy, not a bad idea. got the lfgss track stuff, the odd rolla night dedicated, pub related TTs, drag sprints, GSIAD, alleycats, polo comps, why not a forum hill climb? obviously, it would have to be a hill with a pub at the top, a pub with a sign whose design would lend itself to a good spoke card, T-shirt, tattoo, and that does 6 for 1 boigers.

seriously. we could organise this. coppithat. will be pming ya when i can be arsed.
