I would just ride it as it is. I missed the brazeons bit (in such a short and to-the-point description I don't know how...) but yes i think the whole one bike for every use clubman idea is probably how this came to be like it is. What's wrong with gears anyhow? I've got a lovely Cyclo coil-spring derailleur that would work nicely on it.
On second thoughts, yes you're right, its well dodgy. Don't buy it.
It's my size too.
