MTB/DH cranks

  • how practical is it to use mtb/dh cranks on a track bike?

looking at cheap crankset and some of the mtb stuff comes up as being pretty cheap, in particular the truvativ hussefelt set, typically a double set.

i'm guessing such a chainset would give a chainline other than the typical 42mm for track? obviously this'll then mean getting a shorter axle BB to bring the chainring in for better chainline?

if the crankset is isis does this then limit the choice of BB axle length and so the likelihood of a good chainline?

any other potential problems i should be aware of?

is this gonna be exacerbated by trying to put them on a conversion as opposed to a track frame?

    cheers

  • ask dogballs.

  • i've got 3 piece mtb ones

  • avoid ISIS drive doodahs.

  • ive been considering bmx/dh/mtb cranks
still havent made a choice yet
but i might be getting a pair of madera cranks (profile value brand)
so ill tell you how it goes

  • madera's only 175 or 180mm. lotsa pedal strike.

  • 175 im not too worried though
ive been running 175 cranks and had no problems so far

  • My latest build is having some Shimano hone's on. Chainline is working out OK, only a couple of mm wider than normal. Mine are 170mm, beefy as F**k

They're dual ring but I've just removed the tiny inner.

but with wider bmx cranks and pedals??

  • i dont really think it will be that bad
not that much than usually is

  • god help us.

  • in the 6 months ive rode my bike
ive never once had pedal strike
with my standard wider than usual pedals

  • dale what model cranks do you have again?

  • mtb chainline is usually 51mm. i think the hussefelts use a specific bb too, similar to isis but a bit chunkier. i may be wrong, it happens occasionaly, but you might want to check with thi dealer/importer before buying.

  • q-factor is gash

  • how practical is it to use mtb/dh cranks on a track bike?

    it isn't practical at all!

they are simply not designed for it, overbuilt and with dimensions made for mountain bikes.

with a much wider Q-factor and longer crank length you'll strike the banking, also the BDC will be smaller, meaning you won't be able to get proper sized chainrings

  • Fuck practical, how do they look - that's the important thing here :-)
