My first proper bike (as in not kids bmx) was some yellow MTB which my mom bought me at the age of 8. I loved that thing to bits (considering it wasnt cheap either) and rode it everywhere.
My second bike at the age of 12 was an (unheard of) AUTHOR solution MTB. After about a year of riding I gathered all my birthday/pocket money and with the equivalent of about £200 by todays average monthly salary bought myself a super cool hydraulics fork. This was back in Estonia, so all these high ends products were much more rare and expensive than they would have been in England.
Two years later I moved to England and soon after received this bike as a present from my half-brother who traveled away back home and couldn't take the bike with him. Im sure you've all seen these pieces of shit, halfords used to sell em?
While already owning two bikes I soon busted even more money on a Ridgeback. It kept on getting punctures like crazy for no reason though (see picture) and one point i just didnt bother fixing them. Sadly after only 3 months it got stolen from my garage.
At this point I only had two crappy MTB ridden to bits and hardly anything worked.... My gears were so fucked and clogged up that only the front derailler worked and yet still i tried not to use it too much. This is the point where I got into SS. I sat down on a friday afternoon in my garage and took aaaaalll the shit off those two bikes, everything to cables and pedals. Just chose the best bits and started building up one bike. It took me until Sunday evening almost non-stop of recutting and refitting but I had a single speed MTB with a chain stretched between the smallest ring at the front and the smallest cog at the back. This was the point when I also saw the first fixed gear riders, and noticed them with short bars. I cut mine to about 25cm, they were tiny, in fact the bike was such a mess i never took a picture of it.
Anyway, once i got tired of fixing that one every day and realised it really wasnt reliable i bought this. A dawes shadow.
Then I got bored of gears, stripped it and made it into a SS
Soon after I fixed it as well.
My second fixer was this
And now that all those bikes have been ridden to their death im smashing around on this.
I know my bike history isnt exactly porn, but I was into MTB for a real long time before i had a chance to afford a racing bike.

The cranks off of the geoffrey butler, responsible for this:
The low profile, now sold to harry.major
Final incarnation of the worst/best bike ever, now sold to vinylvillain
Current set up of the holdsworth probably, pending resprayand finally...
Oh how I love posting this picture :)
And here's one of my face, again.
A while ago Alexis at OCW asked me to describe all the bikes I'd built or owned.
having just completed a v. frustrating project, it got me thinking about all the bikes I've had (there's more than this- but no pictures).
this is my two years of bikes (technically 3 as the dawes was a geared bike for a bit at uni- after my mtb- which I'd had since 15 and built up over the years- got nicked):
