the original one is the best and the best looking too.

^ That's not the original langster, this is...

  • is it a 2006 model?

  • Nowt wrong with a Langster, they are probably ne of the most popular OTP single speed bikes out there. The majority of which will be ridden single speed, which is cool, and a few will be fixed, all cool.
What Specialized(and other companies) are doing is planting a seed in peoples minds, in many it may well die, ie the bike will just be a commuter bike. Some will seek out this forum and others, and then get an intrest in riding fixed, and building their own bike...and learn how to enjoy bidding against peple for that par of hubs or rim or whatever.
Critically, for me at least, Specialized(and others) are appealling to a mass market...and succeeding.More people are riding bikes, in fact i believe that his year bike building will outstrip carbuilding....which to me sounds great.
Who gives a shit what bike people ride...i mean where i am living it is rare as hens teeth to find track frames....man i would killto be able to walk to the nearest shop and buy a Langster. I am guilt of being snobby about OTP bikes before, but lets in al honesty view them as a tool to introduce more and more people into cycling.

  • I don't like the forks, they remind me of the Wheelers from Return To Oz.

    na, 2005, my first fixed!

  • Harry Ipschtar, a forum member I believe, owned one and he was a god amongst men..

  • All hail king Harry.

  • I love the Langster, and as you can tell most people start off with the Langster. Great learner bike.

  • Used to have one, looked like shit, rode like an elephant and moved onto better things. If I had known about bikes what I do now I would have never have bought one.

That's still my opinion of the bianchi pista.

I started with that, crashed it multiple times, changed every component on it, then moved on through a variety of conversions/abortive attempts, and eventually got a low profile. I rode that, loved it, then bought a cheapish old track frame as a beater. Fell in love with the lower gear, stopped riding the low profile, sold it and bought a langster as a stand-in while I save up/bide my time for a nice swish Alu track frame.

However, I like the langster so much that I've pretty much canned all plans to upgrade it. I think it's down to having a bike the right size, (my bianchi pista was 2cm too small).

  • rode like an elephant

    How do you mean?

First thing that comes into my mind when I read that is it has very sluggish handling, which is pretty far from the truth in my opinion.

  • yeah, it's well nippy.

In fact, a langster is almost definitely nippier than any bike with an aerospoke up front - those things are like riding with a flat tyre all the time.

  • hehe "you've been spokked"

I'll agree with your Aerospoke comment because when I ride with my H+ instead it's far more responsive.

The Langster just feels lazy and ultimately like it's cruising.

  • Even compared to my lowprofile the langster is stiff and nippy! mind you the joe waugh was kinda flexy. Maybe I've just been craving aluminium all along.. :)

do you think that the stock wheels might've been the reason?

  • do you think that the stock wheels might've been the reason?

Until today i've had the stock wheels on mine and I have no complaints, I was just curious as to what he was getting at with the elephant comment, I assumed he meant it was sluggish (which I don't think it is) however my assumption may be wrong (they usually are =P)

  • Had a Langster (until it got nicked from my shed). Bought it as a cheap commuter, as I figured there was less to go wrong. Served me really well - was reliable, comfortable to ride and cheap. Never having ridden fixed it got me hooked. The theft of my bike has meant that I've had to do what I was going to do, which is to upgrade. Now building up a Bob Jackson frame.

  • Right.. I have never rode a langster... and i really need to have a go... anyone going to north drinks this week so i could try it and see what is all the fuss is about?

  • Sure, i'll be there and a few other Langsters i'm sure.

Now he tells me! turns out I did a measuring fail and the forks on that low pro are smaller than 650c... your 'spok may be back with you sooner than you thought.

    Okay.

The bike gets used 10 times per week. That's 'death' is it?

Oh, I see. You only become a validated member of 'the fixed gear scene' when you start engaging in Ebay bidding wars over bike components.

Hopefully I'll reach those giddy heights of fixiedom one day...

  • My langster used to flex at the rear going round old street roundabout, the rims where terrible and the crank arm came off and bb made strange noises and gave out, they don’t take abuse from larger riders at all. If your over 14 stone forget the langster.

    Total Bollocks.

Tension your spokes then tighten your crank arms
