  • Noticed a few posts recently re. folks losing their seats. If you take yourself off to Clerkenwell Screws and get yourself some security screws... possibly helps put off the scum walking around with a 5mm allen key? I've put a couple on my stem as well. You're never 100% bullet proof, but maybe a few quid well spent?

  • Or just loop a chain round your saddle to your frame - free.

biggest downside? if you lose the special key for the bolts, you'll need to buy a new one.

  • nice one rab.
saves getting ripped the fuck off by "pitlock" anyway

  • Way to piss them off!!! Good going! I'm headed to the hardware store.

  • Those are pretty smart.
Ed's right about losing the tool, would be pretty frustrating.
Guess you could drill a little hole in it and attach it to your keyring though.

  • Ah once your seatpost at the perfect length, you won't need to adjust then regularly, I'm sure it shouldn't be a problem.

  • I'm considering soldering my binder bolt... I think I've finished growing.

Good/bad idea? I would use the fucking search but I've only just remembered I was going to ask and I'm in such a convenient thread

edit: I mean, a drop of solder on each side so it's removable but you can't get an allen key in

The usual trick is to super glue a little ball bearing in there.

Ooh, hadn't thought of that. Solder sounds like it'd be easier to remove? Though I guess it's a less popular option if you don't have easy access to a soldering iron.

  • Nah, just use a chemical to dissolve the superglue, can't remember what it called thought.

  • I do not recommend solder - that was an experiment that I wish I never tried.

    use superglue/ball bearing.
    acetone will dissolve the glue.

but I am curious about these security screws. is there a specific name or part # or anywhere online that sells these?

just scrape it out, with a sharp pointy object.

    google security screws

  • thanks.
how do you figure out the threading/pitch?

  • use superglue/ball bearing.

acetone! ta mate, that'll reduced the damaged to the allen bolt than prying the balls out.

  • i can't see acetone dissolving superglue, i may be wrong though.
acetone btw u can get from Pharmacy as nail polish remover or from behind the counter as 100% acetone.

  • yeah acetone works very gradually.
expect to spend about 20 minutes dissolving and picking per bolt.

  • Or.....

If you own a soldering iron rest it on the ball bearing until the superglue bond is broken by the heat. Then either ping it out, or it might have enough burnt glue residue to stick to the end of the soldering iron.

  • However,

Thieves of seat posts from aluminium frames simply whack the separate collar from underneath. It's very quick.

A bearing in the allen bolt is no defence against this sadly.

  • never thought of that.

  • or...

    hacksaw it off.

  • basically Tynans system of faecal matter spread thinly across the crital parts of the bike would work better than anything.
faecal matter is available to order on-line i heard.

  • A bearing in the allen bolt is no defence against this sadly.

chain looped saddle and frame sort that out, better a stolen seatpost than a saddle.

solder is soft & glue only needs solvents to dissolve it. tricity if your absolutely certain you've stopped growing i can silver solder your components on, at the cost of a beer.

Silver solder FTW. (or poo if you subscribe to tynans theory)

  • what if she starts shrinking?
