yes you could, but as h20 just said an 1/8th chain will run fine on a 3/32 chainring....
If you have an 1/8th chain you'll have more options in the future as it will run in 3/32 sprocket or chairings....if you go for 3/32 (your current charinring and sprocket) you'll never be able to run anything 1/8th.
