No, don't go with a torch. A good light will be pricey, but once you're addicted to night rides, you'll want to use it again and again, and it will be a worthwhile investment. Lighting systems are going insane--there are people on the Dynamo who are brighter than cars. I personally don't know what the latest recommended system is, but there is a shitload of info elsewhere on the old Intrwebsz. I wouldn't be surprised if people had discussed it on here.
