Would you want someone doing that to you?
-

Well when ever I do dink someone (admitadely rather drunkly), I stop and appologize etc but I'm just wondering what the general concesus is.

Ride it like you stole it.

But if you stole it.. we'll get you.

Done it once, didn't do any damage (surprsing as I hit it with the end on my bull horns) but I pulled over, apologised and asked the guy did I do any damage. To be honest he looked more scared than anything, probably expecting me to cycle off =P
But yeah, just imagine what you'd want a driver to do if he hit your bike.

I've caught mirrors on vans because they're high up, but it's never really gonna do damage as they're designed to be caught, but if you put a bar in a panel or break something, it's only right to assess the situation, if they look like a nutter and or are in an expensive car, its probably best to leave it because they are a nutter and or are rich enough to shrug off a scratch? And if they're in a normal car, just something moderate or whatever, stop and offer to pay i guess. But i dunno, i guess the best idea is to know your limits and not crash in the first place.

Ignore it if you can. Pretend you're listening to music and ride off. Good luck if he/she chases you..

I hit a taxi wing mirror on my first ride through the city. I turned round to apologise and he honked me. Sorry cycling community.
-
• #11
I would stop and apologised as soon as I can, who know the driver might get aggarated by the fact you sped off after hitting his wing mirror, and probably end up being less considerated to other cyclists who dare to cross his path.
so in the safety of other cyclists, I quickly stop and apologised for my mistake.

it never happened. blame them. ride fast.

If it was my car you had better stop and offer to pay for the damage. You wouldn't get away.

i would!

Just wondering what you guys think the procedure is when your coasting through traffic on the inside and for example, dink (smash) a wing-mirror (not that I've ever done it . . .). Is it the old wild west pedal as fast as you can and go down as many one-way streets as possible and lose the sucker before hastely changing your clothes. Or is it the good samaratan: stop, appologise exchange details. Let em know people.
Of course you should offer to pay for damage caused by you through your own fault. It does help if you have third-party insurance.
Why do you even have to ask such a strange question?

normally try to raise a hand in apology, except in tight spots where taking one of the bars, would be silly. I did bump a rude boy in a bmw, at 4 in morning on walworth rd. Definetly didnt want to be chased so stopped, looked through through the tinted windows and apolisgised. He made me walk over to his car, while i was surrounded and inspect the 'zero' damage, (thank fuck) I just kept my pride well swallowed and said things like "it looks like a very expensive car yes, i could never afford one so nice, etc" Kept saying sorry and he told me apoligies solve nuffin. Presumably kicking the shit out of me would have. Finally after about 10 minutes, another rude pointed out what i had been politly saying all along. "Yeh but bruv, there ain't no mark." He just stared at his mates, sucked his teeth waved his hand at me, got back in and pulled off."
Being obsequies when your wankered at 4 in the morning can have benefits. -

So more revenge, rather than getting damage paid for?
I've caught my bag on wing mirrors occassionally, adjusting the view rather than damaging them (I hope - no bits breaking off, no glass etc) and one taxi driver, a very nice Nigerian fella from the sounds of things, tried to run me off the road. I decided not to stop with him for a chat about any damage caused.

Had you stopped in the first place would he have got so aggro?
If you hit my car or bike I would expect you to stop and sort the problem/damage out, if you rode or drove off I would be pissed off and would do my best to stop you. Is that really so wrong. If you had the decency to stop I would probably tell you not to worry and that shit happens.

I was wheeling my bike through cars at some lights and my rucksack got caught on his mirror, pulling it around a bit. I then stopped cause we were at the red (he was first in the queue). I apologised through his open window and he started shouting abuse back. When the lights changed I decided not to hang around and he decided to give chase.
There wasn't any damage caused and he was in a better position to rearrange his mirror actually looking into it. Any time when there has been a chance of me causing damage to someones car it's usually involved the car stopping me when I went into the back or side of it, so the driver has usually checked to make sure I'm OK anyway.

Oh, and the only way you are going to stop a cyclist would be by putting them and possibly other road users at risk. For physical damage to a vehicle, that could probably be counted as 'disproportionate'. Not commenting on the moral position of riding off, but how could you stop the cyclist without some form of violence if they didn't want to stop?
