Send £800 to Merican and theyll build you one of these:

Fuck Mercian.
If you have that sort of cash I'd go pay Roberts a visit. -
• #5
why does it have to be 853?
been reading too much internet hype again? -
• #6
Isn't 853 much stronger than 531?
-
• #7
lighter, thinner tubes, and stronger
-
• #8
it is stronger. if you made a frame from the same tube dimensions and same butting thicknesses as 531. the properties of the steel allow thinner buts (.4-.5) and different tube sizes to be used to achieve acceptable strength for the intended use.
it's the different profile tubes that result in small differences in ride 'feel' if the tube dimensions didn't change the frame would weigh and ride the same as a 531 frame, it would be stronger though. so you use the material properties to either build a stronger frame for the same weight or a lighter frame for the same strength. if these small differences are worth the extra cost for the performance gains on the track is for you or your coach to decide.
personally for track riding i would worry about fitness before 250g of weight savings on a frame. -
• #9
oh well, thanks smithy. 250g is the weight difference between a brooks and say a flite. not much overall on a complete frame.

that was just a figure i guessed. i had 2 mtb frames in 520 and 853 that i rode back to back with identical parts the 853 one a smaller diameter top tube and thinner butting then the 520 version. the ride was a little bit livelier (in a good way) on the 853 it weighed half a pound less and cost 40% more than the 520.
i also have a genesis 853 road bike here on loan it's one of the dullest riding bikes i have ever swung a leg over. if i was having a steel bike made for me it would probably be out of deda shaped (not round) sat14 or eom16 built by somebody who was familier with the tubing. -

I've got a Graham Weigh for sale, 853, 54cm c-t seat tube, 54 c-c top tube. It's sat in Cavendish at the mo, feel free to pop in and have a look, or i'll take some pics tomorrow. Looking for £250ish for frame and fork with headset!

953 ftw
-
• #13
i'm waiting for 1053, it'll be lighter than air and stronger than a bull
-
• #14
Why 853? Cause if I'm building up a bike with good parts I want a good frame to go with it. 953 is too expensive so next best thing.
@ phasergunalex - could you chuck up a few pics? Thanks.

i ride a 531 holdsworth, from circa 1978.. How log you gonna ride it? Mine is dead strong (and ugly) but will run and run, and soaks up the nasty london cobbles with ease.. Oh hang on its not a track frame, appologies.

Sorry by track frame I mean horizontal dropouts. Will be for single speed/fixed flip-flop. Preferably in bad condition (cheaper) because I think I'll be having bottle cage bosses added which will damage the paint anyway.

Go to 14 and they can build you anything you want!

Cool, i'll take some pics tomorrow then. The frame itself is undrilled, although the forks are drilled...if you're going to run it SS would you be wanting to run a rear brake? Not sure if you'd be able to drill it really, although there are 'keirin' style clamp on brake available for the rear. I'll take a pic of the rear bridge anyway!

Nah you can get a bit chopped out and have a square boss put in I am pretty sure. The normal bridge tubing isnt strong enough for the brake bolt. -

you just want a good frame to build up with good part, regardless of the tubing (as long it's decent).

Yeah but I like steel, it just seems much more comfortable. Although I've heard titanium has similar properties? -

what's wrong with deda HTS zero replica or columbus life tubing?

How much do they cost? I can only spend a couple of hundred on the frame. Reynolds 853 frames aren't much more expensive than 531/631 but are a fair bit lighter. -

my friend is selling one.....graham weigh ,53 st,56tt......comes with thomson seatpost, with or without forks......either itm millenium or straight reynolds 531 undrilled.......

before someone else says it
you seem to know nothing about tubing
and or frames
if i was youd id get a frame ride it
and youd not notice any difference especially riding on the road
Horizontal top tube, horizontal dropouts, any condition. Top tube should be 54-55.5cm.
Cheers
