what about those old school cycle helmets, the ones with like 5 strips of foam, lengthways on the head, held together by leather/nylon strapping, you know what I mean? Do they still make them anymore?
years ago you had to wear some kind of helmet when you raced. most riders wore the hairnet helmet but didnt really want to. there was a vogue for really tiny ones to be worn just about perched on top of your head. worn correctly they will offer more protection that a cotton hat but really it depends on the speed at which you are travelling when you head comes into contact with the immovable object be it ground, track or vehicle. if the force or speed is broken by your shoulder, arm etc then it will do something. all helmets i feel will offer a level of protection over your naked head. the bs kite mark rule okay sets a standard but its just a get out clause for the manufacturers maybe. last year "it was our fault" but next year "we told you that you shouldnt be using that helmet anymore".
