Twitter has a open api for the updates.
Twitter has hundreds if not thousands of utilities and tools that consume or create updates.
Twitter has SMS alerts in some countries, and other countries you can use things like http://www.twitsms.co.uk/twitsms/public/index to receive updates to any mobile phone.
Twitter updates are so visible that news spreads faster via twitter than by any other medium.
Twitter rocks... get on there, use it, take it easy, accept you don't have to read everything... and when you suddenly find you need it, it's there.
