slack? oval chain ring? bad chain line? cosmic forces? basement cat hates you? ...

Your chainline is wrong? EDIT: what Matt said.
Try posting in the mechanics and fixing sub-forum, lots of knowledgeable types there.

ok thanks, i got my chain tension right, but maybe it was the chainline.

could still be the chain line. get down and look at it.

I just changed my unbranded crankset, which had a 40t chainring on it (was running 40:15), to a campagnolo record crankset with a 42t chainring (now running 42:15) and now my chain comes off pretty quickly. any ideas why?
i also changed my chain so that i could get the tension right. is chainline the only thing i could have got wrong?

Take a photo of it. We love those chainline photos.

Is your chain tight?
Is your chainline straight? -

If only there were a section of the forum for these kind of questions. Something along the lines of Mechanics and Fixing, that kind of thing.
Oh and maybe we could have one for rides and racing, Maybe call it Rides and Racing.
Anyone else got any suggestions for section names? -

How is my spiteful sarcasm ever going to work if threads get moved from one section to another while I'm typing eh?

think i've got it sorted. here's a pic. don't know if you can see what's going on too well.
-
• #19
What did you do to it?
(sorry can't see pics)
Looks OK - chainring is still a little bit further out than cog.- get a shorter BB if you wnat to use the outer bolt-holes.

It doesn't look off to me.
-
• #21
just tightened it further onto the bottom bracket and spaced the chainring a little.

chainline looks good - if 2nd-hand chainring, could the teeth be worn so much that it falls off (actually thinking about it, a nice chainline like that - the teeth would have to be worse than the ones in my mouth. believe me that is bad)

Cant see the images but any chance the chain is 3/32 on 1/8 ring or sprocket?
-
• #24
if it still throws check the chain ring is true and also not oval.

i think the chain is 3/32, chainring is 3/32 i think, and the sprocket is 1/8. i know this isn't good practice, but it shouldn't throw the chain should it?
anyway i just took it for a test ride and the chain doesn't come off any more, only annoying thing is a slight rattling sound, especially when slowing down. i'm guessing this is just parts of the chain rattling? i didn't have this chain on before and there was no sound.
