why is there a braking surface?
i thought sheriff stars were strictly track?
-
• #3
there is a braking surface because somebody laced it onto a rim with a braking surface
-
• #4
obviously, the point i was trying to make is has someone been using this on the street? if it was used on the track then there wouldn't be a brake involved
-
• #5
People often ride track specific things on the street. I've even seen track bikes on the street. ;)
-
• #6
but hubs with unsealed bearings such as in sheriff stars can get damaged easily by street use
-
• #7
well ok if your going to wittle me down
i thought that if you rode them on the street you would fuck them up
perhaps i got the wrong end of the stick or skim read the wrong thing

i have been riding campy track records on the street, no problems, just have to clean/regrease more often.. actually you can feel when grease becomes sticky (i'm sensitive:) pure pleasure to ride on when freshly regreased :)

We've been round this one a million times
Nothing to do with bearings or anything else.
Riding track sherrif stars on the road does this...
... to them, so don't

^^ that was my point.
and that is a terrible shame -

so how serious is this 'no sherrif stars on the road'? Do they break easily or do you have to hit some real big pothole? I am just about to start riding new build with sherrif stars laced to atlanta rims. I am usually a careful rider and avoid potholes. Or should I better leave those super nice wheels hanging from the ceiling and put something else on?
That photo worries me. Are those yours gizmond?

ha, just read the sheldon brown article. Would still like to know what people experience is with those hubs.
-
• #13
i wouldn't risk it TBH. if that happens you'll be pissed, and out of pocket a fair amount.

Isn't it only the rear hub that blows up?
Sheriffs were also made in road versions.
Was there any difference in the design? Are they fragile as well?

teddy always rides his on "the street"

Been riding mine on the street for a year no probs. But you never know. They make lovely pendents too.
-
• #17
A year may not be very long, if you're not doing many miles, but I'm sure spoke pattern and tension comes into play here as well, but yes mine failed just like the one above....also campag gear is not made for people over 80kg...it says so in their guranatee!
-

Aren't they also not warranted for radial spoking? Not that they would retain any warranty any more anyway.

aaa... you talking about blowouts as they call it... seen this photo before, but haven't experienced or seen one in flesh :)

i'm 68kg, spoke pattern front: radial, rear: radial/2x
clearly sheriff''s not worth spending money on if you are fat :))

spoke pattern front: radial, rear: radial/2x
good luck with that.

3 cross FTW
-
• #23
Yeah, radial is for fags... No offence...
-
• #24
It's not ideal on the 'road' but London isn't exactly offroad and they look pretty to some folks....
They don't just break apart when not on a fucking track.

Heh ... The radial backlash is coming, another sign of the End Times?
I saw an urban hip hop fixie conversion with a pie plate the other day! Seriously! Unless it was a singler who liked to keep pedalling all the time to make it look like it was fixed. Went well with the whole riding single and having no back brake phenomenon (and no bar tape, natch).
my friend is selling this one
front c record sheriff star track hub laced two cross onto cxp33 tied and soldered
has seen some light use......bearings smooth as butter.....if anyone is interested in building this into something else than its perfectly doable
anyone interested?????
cheers
