Low stack headsets

  • Does anyone know a good very low stack headset in chrome/silver.
Not very much treading left on the fork. Current one is a Suntour but need to replace it as the seems to get stuck slightly in the center. Any advice?

  • chris king grip-nut has the lowest, only the bottom nut screws onto steerer, then top bolt screws onto bottom bolt. i got one on mine.

  • tange passage are cheaper at cycle basket (even with delivery)
they have a very low stack height - looks like I will be chopping my steerer this weekend :(

  • Stronglight A4 is low and inexpensive

Don't-- buy some spacers (cyclebasket sell them and so should other shops).

If you cut and later want to get a better headset, you'll have to get a King, which is a pricey option.

  • rich: can you use spacers with a threaded steerer? i did have that idea but assumed that it was only done on threadless.

    The Tange headset
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-T...eight-9225.htm comes with a ~2mm spacer (see pic). I am using 3 such spacers on my current build. Not ridden it yet but I can see no reason for it to not work.

  • The silver ring in the photo is the keyed washer rather than a spacer, but I think additional spacers above it should work too so I'm going to give it a go. If the people in the bike shop ask what it's for I'm going to lie and say it's for a threadless headset ;)

It's irrelevant if, like on my fork, there's no groove for the keyed washer's key to slot into. But anyhow, keyed or not, it is just a piece of metal so I can't see why spacers wouldn't work. We'll know by the end of the week when I finish my build I suppose :-)

I believe it's http://www.cyclebasket.com/products.php?plid=m9b9s403p377 that I'm using, by the way.

  • Spacers do work on threaded headsets. I installed a new headset on a lovely Vitus 979 frame I got off ebay at Christmas and found that the locknut wasn't able to screw down far enough, so I bought a spacer to fit in the gap. Before the spacer came in the post I was using the crown race from the old headset as a makeshift spacer but it looked absolutely terrible, despite being perfectly functional, so it had to go.
