  • Hi Gustav, I went out in 2002 for a couple of weeks climbing. We flew from Gatwick to Alghero, but you can go by ferry, which allot of Dutch and French people seem to prefer. Alghero is a great place to start a tour of Sardinia "Alghero is one of those places that the Italians have been happy to keep to themselves. Tucked away on the north-western coast of the island of Sardinia, this fishing port remains unspoiled and mostly devoid of the package holiday crowds." We stayed here on our first night then drove over to Cala Gonone on the East cost of the island. When I say drove, I mean we crawled as every police car we saw stopped us, checked our passports wanted to know where we were going. It was a couple of weeks early that a retired English couple had been murdered. They just were warning us to stay of the back roads and to keep our wits about us.
Turning of the SS125 into a mountain tunnel, as we drove out of the tunnel it was a wonderful sight to see as the bay of Cala Gonone was spread out in front of us.
Camping at http://www.campingcalagonone.it/index/indexinglese.htm which was not that cheap, being late season. On advice from some Dutch climbers it was easier and cheaper to take an apartment which we did on the second day. Food was good and people were very friendly.

Mad dogs and English men. Go out in the mid day sun !
